Srirangam (ஸ்ரீரங்கம் Śrīraṅkam or திருவரங்கம் Tiruvaraṅkam), an island 10 km (6.2 mi) north of Tiruchirappalli in Central Tamil Nadu, is famous for the Ranganathaswamy Temple, one of the largest Hindu temples in India.

[edit]- 1 Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Srirangam (bus #1). The deity of the temple is the sleeping form of Lord Vishnu. It has 21 gopurams and the biggest of them is 73 m high. The temple complex area is 2.5 km (1.6 mi). Non-Hindus can only go up to the sixth enclosure but not inside the gold-topped sanctum sanctorum. Free entrance, ₹50 (+₹20 camera) for roof access.
- 2 Jambukeswarar Temple (less than 1 km from Sri Ranganathaswamy temple). Famous Shiva temple and one of the five "pancha bhuta" sites (five elements namely water, earth, air, fire and ether). This one is appu sthala (representing water). Free entrance.
- 3 Kattu Narasimha Perumal Temple (Azhagiya Singar Temple).

[edit]- 1 Butterfly Park (வண்ணத்துப்பூச்சி பூங்கா Vaṇṇattuppūcci Pūṅkā), Tropical Butterfly Conservatory Campus, Srirangam Taluk (Around 20km from Trichy junction by bus. After reaching Srirangam, you can take a minibus up to the Butterfly Park. The minibus may come once in 45 minutes), ☏ +91 431 241 4265. 9AM-6PM, closed on Tuesdays. Large park featuring a glass butterfly house, landscaped gardens, a fountain and an eatery. There are many huts made of hay, so it is convenient to sit and have fun along with family even on a sunny day. There is a small boating pond and play areas for kids. Many plants are labelled properly with their local name and biological name, so it is educational.

[edit]- You have lots of trinkets to buy at the shops inside and around the temple. Beware of specially-high prices for tourists.
- A photo of the main deities of the Temple shall be a good piece of memorabilia to purchase.
- For reasons best known to Him, kitchen-ware made of iron are highly sought-after at the temple-shops [known as Ranga-Vilas Shops].
Eat
[edit]There aren't any high class restaurants available around here, but still you have few better hotels.
Drink
[edit]- Fresh fruit-juice at the shops nearby the temple.
- Tender-coconut is the best drink for hot places like this.
