Terni is in the Umbria region of Italy. It is mainly an industrial town and as a result was heavily bombed by the Allies during the Second World War. In the 19th Century it was known as the "Manchester of Italy".

[edit]From Rome, take the A1 Autostrada, leaving at Orte and follow the SS675 to Terni.
Trains run regularly from the Rome-Termini station. If you are coming from the north, take a train that stops at Orte to connect to the Terni train.

[edit]As a result of the bombing much of the city was heavily damaged. Consequently, Terni is now considered more interesting for its post-war architecture than its older structures. It is a place to visit if you are passing by, rather than somewhere that merits a special effort.
- 1 City Hall (Palazzo Spada), Via Roma. The building is in the Renaissance style, and was designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger. The interior features notable frescoes depicting Greek myths and the battle of Lepanto.
- 2 Caos, Viale Luigi Campofregoso, 98, ☏ +39 0744 28594. A former factory of methanol and other chemical products, now turned into museum. It houses a small, but interesting collection of works by Domenico Ghirlandaio and other minor Renaissance painters. The museum also displays archaeological items ranging from the early Iron Age to the late Roman Period.
- 3 The Cathedral. was built in the 17th century.
- 4 Church of St.Francis. (12th century) has a beautiful chapel (the Paradisi Chapel) with frescoes from the 14th century.
- 5 Church of St. Salvatore, Via Cesare Bazzani, ☏ +39 0744 420467. is believed to have been built upon a Roman temple.
There are also ruins of a Roman Amphitheater and old town walls , together with some medieval buildings.
Excursions
[edit]- 6 Cascate delle Marmore (can be reached from Terni by Bus No.7 or 21). These artificial waterfalls were built by the Romans. Whitewater rafting trips are available.[1]
- 7 Lake Piediluco. A few km further east is Lake Piediluco, which hosts the Italian National Rowing Center and plays host to rowing teams from all over the world because of its almost ideal rowing conditions.
