    Thetford is a town of 24,000 people (2011) in Norfolk, England. Thetford contains the ruins of Thetford Castle and Thetford Priory, which was closed during the Reformation.

    Thetford is noted for being the birthplace of Thomas Paine, where a statue of him stands on King Street. The external scenes for the British comedy TV series Dad's Army were filmed in and around the town's flint buildings.

    The town lies on the Norwich to Newmarket A11 road. The A134 main road connects the town to King's Lynn to the N and to Bury St Edmunds to the S. The A1066 connects the town to Diss in the E.

    • 2 Icknield Way. A long-distance footpath (110 miles) from Ivinghoe Beacon in Chiltern Hills) also ends in Knettishall Heath though includes a Thetford link taking walkers into the town.     • 6 Thetford Castle (Castle Hill, Castle Mound and Military Parade). The ruins of a medieval motte and bailey castle. The first castle in Thetford, a probable 11th-century Norman ringwork called Red Castle, was replaced in the 12th century by a much larger motte and bailey castle on the other side of the town. This new castle was largely destroyed in 1173 by Henry II, although the huge motte, the second largest man-made mound in England, remained intact.
