Tohmajärvi is a municipality in North Karelia, Finland. Kemie is the administrative centre.

The municipality is located at the Russian border, with a border crossing. The Värtsilä municipality was consolidated with Tohmajärvi in 2005.

Tohmajärvi is on the Blue Highway – from Mo i Rana via Umeå, Vaasa, Kuopio and Joensuu – the last stretch to Tohmajärvi along highway 9. The route crosses the border at the 62.1728430.611621 Niirala border crossing point (the Russian side: Värtsilä, Вя́ртсиля) and continues to Petrozavodsk (Finnish: Petroskoi).

Highway 6, via Imatra in the south, passes through the western part of the municipality, where it joins Highway 9 from Joensuu.
