Tui Voyage Tips and guide

You can check the original Wikivoyage article Here

Tui is a town of 17,000 people (2018) in Galicia on the right bank of the Miño River, facing the Portuguese town of Valença. Its medieval city is the second largest by area in Galicia.

Tui lies on the Portuguese Way of St. James (Camino Portuguese). The town is the second most often picked starting point to do a Camino de Santiago. Over 30,000 pilgrims started here in 2024. The pilgrims choose Tui because the distance from this point to Santiago allows them to cover the necessary kilometres to get the certificate of accomplishment.

    Understand

    [edit]
The hill of the town centre, with the cathedral

Tui is the spelling in Galician and Portuguese. The Castilian Spanish spelling is Tuy.

    Get in

    [edit]

The nearest airport is in Vigo which rather serves domestic destinations and international one-stop connections by Iberia. Direct international flights you will rather find to Santiago de Compostela or even more likely to the airport of Porto.

From Vigo there are direct buses to Tui and trains to Valença and Guillarei.

From Santiago you need to change in Vigo.

From Porto take a train to Valença. Some trains are direct. For others you need to change in Nine (in Vila Nova de Famalicão).

As of January 2025 there are generally only trains stopping in Valença and 1 Guillarei Guillarei railway station on Wikipedia, the latter some 3 km north-east of Tui centre, but not in the train station of Tui.

Two bridges connect Tui and Valença: Tui International Bridge (known in Portugal as Valença International Bridge), completed in 1878, and a modern one from the 1990s. Both countries are signatories of the Schengen Treaty, so there are normally no formalities in crossing the border-point with Northern Portugal. There is no public transport between both towns. You need to walk over the pedestrian bridge.
