CotW unscheduled nominations are getting a bit thin!

    [edit]

We could do with a few more suggestions for articles that could be future CotWs, so if you know of any please be sure to add them to the list! Thanks -- (WT-en) Tim (writeme!) 08:02, 4 June 2007 (EDT)

Thanks for moving that stuff to the Spanish page where it belongs. Unfortunately, practically all of it was copied from the official tourism website (www.turismoquidio.com), so I ended up removing it again anyway. I figure it is highly unlikely that it was the official tourism agency who copied that text from us. Anyway, thanks again. (WT-en) Texugo 23:23, 7 June 2007 (EDT)

Actually, on second thought, I'm sure there is some info to be extracted from the text that won't be copyvio. I'll take another look at it when I have time. (WT-en) Texugo 23:25, 7 June 2007 (EDT)

    Creation Museum

    [edit]

What are your thoughts on listing the Creation Museum in the Cincinnati guide? The Museum is actually about 22 miles outside of Cincinnati (subtract about five miles from where Google takes you) and from what I understand Petersburg, KY would not constitute an article. We could list it in either Hebron (Kentucky) which is where the CVG airport is, or possibly even Lawrenceberg (Indiana), but no one is likely to think Indiana when they go looking for this museum. I guess a short one liner could be included in the Cincinnati guide, but, in my humble opinion, that's pushing it. I know we don't have a Hebron guide, yet, but I could get something started and just shuffle the listing into that guide, but for now I've listed it in Northern Kentucky. -- (WT-en) Sapphire(Talk) • 13:23, 8 June 2007 (EDT)

I put it in the Cincy guide because it seemed like the nearest real destination, being in the metro area. I don't have a problem with putting it elsewhere, but I'm not sure that Hebron's [1] an actual destination any more than Petersburg is. Until someone develops the local region hierarchy, Northern Kentucky is probably the best place for it. - (WT-en) Todd VerBeek 13:37, 8 June 2007 (EDT)

    County Redirection

    [edit]

Hi Todd, I noticed you are doing redirects for counties in Illinois. I am wondering if you have a new plan for region breakdown? I know your aversion for creating articles for small places and also using government areas for places that are small, but should we not discuss this and come to a consensus? For the most part counties have been used as place markers for cities to keep the list size down in larger regions. I am not around as much lately, so I may have missed it, has the policy changed? I know I felt that counties were not very good at one point, but have changed my thoughts on that. If there is a discussion on this somewhere, let me know as I would like to chime in for the little places. *grin* Thanks. -- (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 10:36, 10 June 2007 (EDT)

I admit that I don't have a master plan. I was just trying to fix a couple badly-named new articles, and decided to pick up a little trash I saw in the neighborhood. I think it's counterproductive to create county articles as "place markers", because that discourages people from coming up with something better. I'd rather see a list of 15 towns in a region until someone figures out a good way to organize them, than to have an empty (except for a list of one or two towns) county article sit there as a (not very good) example of How We Do Things. For that matter, I don't think that having a list of 15 towns at the bottom level of the hierarchy is really such a bad thing. - (WT-en) Todd VerBeek 11:12, 10 June 2007 (EDT)
We really do need a master plan, I will join in on the discussion. I agree with you that having more then 9 listed is not really a bad thing on some levels as well, but we must do it in an organized way and not just redirect or delete because it is a small place. Some of the changes you have made are leaving behind some of what I call "hidden" orphaned pages as that may appear on a dab page or a link in a description or talk page, but not as a town in a region article. I don't know all the answers, but I will defend articles for small places and argue that there are some people that would travel there and would like to know about them, regardless if there is commercial place where you have to pay to sleep or not. -- (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 11:34, 10 June 2007 (EDT)

There is a place there to sleep and it is a Bed and Breakfast. I also don't believe it qualifies under the speedy delete policy. I am going to undelete this one and add content for that sometime today and if you like, please put it up for VFD. -- (WT-en) Tom Holland (xltel) 11:34, 10 June 2007 (EDT)

It looked like one of the worthless articles created by the spaz from Maine to waste our time. I can't confirm whether he's the one who created it, but I can now confirm that it has successfully wasted our time. I'm not wasting any more of mine on it. - (WT-en) Todd VerBeek 12:39, 10 June 2007 (EDT)

    New search engine

    [edit]

I'd love to get your opinion on the new search engine on review (http://wikivoyage.org/review/Special:Search). When you get a chance, please check it out and give your feedback on wts:WtTech:Lucene search. --(WT-en) Evan 12:46, 12 June 2007 (EDT)

With summer vacation our page-creation friend has returned, but provided we simply delete any useless articles he creates he seems pretty harmless. It's also worth noting that the IP address resolves to a center for kids with behavioral issues in Portland [2], so it's possible his persistence in returning to create empty articles stems from spending his summer stuck in a rather uninteresting place. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 21:59, 24 June 2007 (EDT)

Having a neurological disorder of some kind has always been his excuse, and I've believed him because it certainly fits his behavior. I'm a little surprised they don't have him better supervised online, though I suppose the staff probably figure the internet's a mostly-harmless diversion for him as long as he isn't surfing porn sites. - (WT-en) Todd VerBeek 22:34, 24 June 2007 (EDT)

    Split pages

    [edit]

Todd, you had some comments about the plan to tech:optionally split long guides into one page per section. Since I've got a new version of software on review: to do this, I'd love to get your feedback on the shared: tech page. --(WT-en) Evan 13:28, 10 July 2007 (EDT)

    Hello,

I just saw this page you started today. I personally do not like the idea of someone who owns a business writing for Wikivoyage (about his hotel/restaurant/bar) at all, but before starting a new discussion on this: has there already been a discussion? --(WT-en) Flip666 writeme! • 16:31, 21 July 2007 (EDT)

I don't recall that it's ever been discussed, because it's implicitly permitted by the principle that "anyone can contribute". As long as they follow the content guidelines, why should they be prohibited? - (WT-en) Todd VerBeek 23:52, 21 July 2007 (EDT)

The employer that's been taking up most of my time for the past few months... we've had a parting of the ways. So I have a little more time for stuff like Wikivoyage now. - (WT-en) Todd VerBeek 19:52, 30 November 2007 (EST)
Ahh. Your back. Welcome back, I did need some photo work done, but could not find you, so I upgraded my computer and SW. I thought maybe a bear bushwacked you and had you for lunch. (WT-en) 2old 10:59, 5 December 2007 (EST)

    Poke!

    Map of San Serriffe

    [edit]

Is there some special software you used to make it? I'm interested in producing something similar. 80.123.210.172 14:07, 12 September 2009 (EDT)

Todd probably created that in Inkscape [3]. Project:How to draw a map has some tips on how to get started on a WT-style map drawn with that program. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 14:16, 12 September 2009 (EDT)
Thanks for the info. 80.123.210.172 06:04, 13 September 2009 (EDT)

Hey Todd, firstly I'd like to say that your presence here is sorely missed! Secondly, do you have an SVG for Image:Star-icon.png? --(WT-en) Peter Talk 22:55, 2 November 2009 (EST)

    Pic help

    [edit]

Hey there...I'll take you up on your image upload help! I can't seem to upload any images. I am logged in, go to Help, How to, Upload images, Upload page...and then each time I try to click on that page, I become logged out and the page doesn't recognize my screen name when I attempt to log back in. Is this because my IP is China-based? I'd like to be able to upload some pics but not sure why I'm having these issues! Using latest version of Firefox 3; cleared cache, have cookies enabled...hmm...thanks in advance for any help!(WT-en) Zepppep 17:59, 21 December 2009 (EST)

Resolved. I didn't sign up for an account (can you say "airhead?") although this isn't really disclosed until much deeper into the pages than I would like to see. Just wanted to update you in case you were pondering a response (I think you were probably not looking to respond but appreciate your offer for help about 2.5 yrs ago on my talk page).(WT-en) Zepppep 14:11, 7 January 2010 (EST)
