Welcome!

[edit]

Welcome to our new home, and thanks for your tidy up at Ely. We have nice shiny Directory of policies and guidelines when you have time for some light reading. Or alternatively, you could refer to some of our Star articles to see some of our best work. If you need any help, of find any question unanswered, feel free to ask in the pub --Inas (talk) 01:20, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, Inas. I'm already active at the English Wikipedia, and other Wiki-sites, and I figured I could drop in here and help. I've done some work at Munich, which is where I live now, and Ely which is where I have lived in the past. I'm going to start on all the places I've lived, so that'll be Reading, Milton Keynes, Port Moresby and Reykjavík (where I was born). From there onwards, we'll see what comes along! Thanks for the welcome! BarkingFish 01:32, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

    Ely (England)

    [edit]

Hi! Thanks for your contribution! But why do you classify the earlier text as vandalism? Was it inaccurate? If your only concern is the style, it is nothing to worry about. Wikivoyage appreciates lively writing style. Eating places have their character, and we have to convey it. Reading a travel guide should be fun. --Atsirlin (talk) 07:17, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

"Lively writing style" - describing Ely 2 days a week as "smelling of burgers" and having a food van which has been around since the start of the Vietnam War - telling people there's a pub in the Arse end of nowhere (which is really quite offensive to people in the fens - they're rural, but not that rural), or that said pub has lots of loud swearing, and implies that people are hungover and sit outside farting (which ruins their trade) - bits of text which don't make any sense at all (what the hell is the treasured Jaffa cakes of Bury St Edmunds "own miss black america"?), etc, etc, ad infinitum.
What I removed, I would mostly consider vandalism. Humor is different, and "lively" is subjective - there's got to be a line between "lively" and "rude" - and if you're from the Fens, or Ely in particular, making it sound like a shithole with "baddies drinking", pubs which appear to have the prerequisite of being a "dick" before you can go in, places which appear to be in the middle of nothing, and having old food vans and a distinct impression of loutism - does nothing to help their city's image.
I did however, also remove some information which was out of date and add some which was missing - The existance of Caitlins Sandwich Bar, which has been gone for almost a year - TESCO not being a 24 hour, 7 day a week store, and adding that Littleport show was cancelled 2012 as well.
What is the problem? BarkingFish 13:19, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
As I have never been to Ely, and English is not my native language, I trust your feelings. I can only say that the previous text was not vandalism. Vandalism is a deliberate edit that adds wrong information to the article. The text in question was simply a biased opinion (printed travel guides have lots of such things as well). It is perfectly fine to remove potentially offensive statements, but please, don't call them vandalism and don't take this text personal. I am sure that the author was fair in writing about his/her impressions. And the author did put some useful information into the article. Good luck and thanks for your help! --Atsirlin (talk) 13:55, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

    Munich

    [edit]

Sorry, it's me again. The idea of articles about big cities is to have all individual listings (restaurants, hotels, etc.) in individual districts. The Eat section of the main article is only for general information about local cuisine, main restaurant locations, etc. You should not put any individual listings there, and the Budget-Mid-range-Splurge sections are unnecessary. The place you added should go to Munich/City_Center. Thanks for your help! --Atsirlin (talk) 20:34, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Here is the relevant policy. It is fine to mention one-two quintessential places as a single line (birthplace of Weisswurst — that's something cool!) but detailed info, address, and prices should go to the Munich/City_Center article. --Atsirlin (talk) 20:44, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

That should now be fixed. BarkingFish 21:31, 13 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
