In some situations, it is necessary for accounts to be exempted from the automated confirmation period. The confirmed
group contains the same rights as the autoconfirmed
group, but can be granted by bureaucrats as necessary. There is no point in giving this right to a user whose account is already autoconfirmed, because it provides the same abilities.
When assigning confirmed
, it should only be assigned for a temporary duration (usually between 3–5 days). Since users will gain autoconfirmed after 4 days and making 3 edits, there is no purpose in assigning confirmed indefinitely. Exceptions can and do exist, particularly for bot accounts.
Previously this permission was only able to be assigned by bureaucrats. However, in February 2025, this was changed to also allow sysops to grant confirmed status.
