Wikivoyage:Contributing with little to no knowledge of English Voyage Tips and guide

You can check the original Wikivoyage article Here

    This page is a draft.

Although it's preferable to have some knowledge of English to contribute to this project, the English Wikivoyage community is generally a friendly community that will accommodate editors that don't speak English or speak very little English. This page attempts to summarise what you can and shouldn't do if you fall into such criteria.

    Contacting an experienced editor

    [edit]

The first thing you should try to do is to potentially get in touch with an admin or experienced editor who speaks your native language to some significant extent.Wikivoyage:Administrators#Babel scales collates a list of admins with babel boxes listed; however, there are other experienced non-admins who may also speak your language. No page exists listing the babel language scales of such users, but you can potentially gather an understanding from popular discussion venues. There is no requirement that discussions must be in English.

    What can you do

    [edit]
    • Add a babel box – adding a babel box to your userpage or talk page allows for other editors to recognise your limited English skills.
    • Add or update listings – it's possible to add the name, alternate name, url, phone number, email, address or the coordinates of a listing without needing to know English. The only fields that require you to know English are the directions and descriptions fields, which you may omit. Similarly, if a listing is out of date and/or closed, by all means, plunge forward and update or remove the listing.
    • Maps
      • Drawing a static map – drawing a static map simply requires proficiency in either Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator. If you are familiar with either of those software programs, by all means, feel free to draw and expand Wikivoyage's collection of static maps!
      • Adding/fixing mapshapes – similarly only requires knowledge of template syntax. If you are drawing a boundary from scratch, also knowledge of GPX and how to use the Mapmask–geojson converter.
      • Adding maplines – adding geolines similarly don't require any English skills.

    What to avoid

    [edit]
    • Significant copyedits – leave copyedits to those more familiar with the English language.
    • Inserting content in a language that is not English – the last thing you want is to annoy regulars by having to translate your edits into mainspace in English. Expect the addition of non-English content to be reverted.
