Yarm is a small town in North Yorkshire at the tidal limit of the River Tees, with a population of 8700 in 2024. Its High Street has many handsome Georgian buildings.
Eaglescliffe is a town just north of the River Tees and thus in County Durham, but also described here. Its population was 11,000 in 2024. Along with Yarm it's a commuter town for Stockton-on-Tees.
Understand
[edit]The world's first public railway, the Stockton & Darlington Railway, passed through Eaglescliffe with a spur to Yarm. It opened on 27 Sept 1825, hauled by Stephenson's steam locomotive No 1 "The Locomotion". After the grand opening, steam power was reserved for hauling coal — much more lucrative — and passenger trains were horse-drawn until 1833.
Get in
[edit]By road
[edit]Follow A19: from the south branch off on A67. From the north join A66 west to come onto A135.
Arriva Bus 7 runs from Stockton-on-Tees via Eaglescliffe to Yarm, taking 25 min. It's every 20 min M-Sa and hourly on Sunday.
By train
[edit]Transpennine Express runs hourly from Manchester Airport, Piccadilly and Victoria via Huddersfield, Leeds, York, Thirsk and Northallerton to Yarm, continuing to Eaglescliffe, Thornaby, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Saltburn-by-the-Sea. From London and the south, change at York.
1 Yarm Station is on Green Lane at the south edge of town. It's just a platform halt with ticket machines and a sheltered waiting area. There's step-free access to both platforms.
2 Eaglescliffe Station is more convenient for anywhere north of the river. As well as the Manchester trains, it has Northern Rail trains every 30 min M-Sa from Darlington via Allens West. These continue north to Thornaby, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Saltburn-by-the-Sea. A couple of direct trains run M-Sa from London King's Cross via York to Eaglescliffe, continuing to Hartlepool and Sunderland. Eaglescliffe has a staffed ticket office and step-free access to the island platform.
By plane
[edit]3 Teesside Airport (MME IATA) is five miles west in Darlington. It has regular flights from Amsterdam and seasonal flights from the Med.

See
[edit]
- Yarm High Street is a broad, part-cobbled thoroughfare with many Georgian buildings, such as the dinky little Town Hall built in 1710. Pity about the traffic: heavy vehicles are banned but it's still the busy A67.
- Yarm Castle wouldn't repel any invader for long. It's almost 3 feet tall, and it's simply a garden ornament at 52 West Street. There was a real Jarum Castle in Norman times at the top of High Street, but no trace remains of that, or of the friary.
- 1 Yarm Viaduct, completed in 1852, carries the railway across the River Tees. It has 43 arches.

Among other advantages, "there are no corners for the devil to hide in."
