This county has the second-largest population in Gyeongsangbuk-do, following Chilgok County.
The name Yecheon (醴泉) can be broken down into two Chinese characters: 醴 (lǐ, meaning "sweet wine") and 泉 (quán, meaning "spring"). An alternate theory suggests that the name originates from the ancient Korean word Dansleor, meaning "vast and wide land," and was later adapted into Chinese characters.
The northern region of Gyeongsangbuk-do has historically been influenced by traditional Confucian culture, which led to a strong preference for male offspring. Yecheon, in particular, held the highest male birth ratio in the country for several years since the 1980s. However, with the gradual weakening of this cultural preference, the county now maintains a more balanced gender birth ratio.
The name Yecheon is derived from Yecheon County in Shaanxi Province, China. According to the Yecheon County Records (Yecheon Hyeonji), compiled during the reign of the Ming Emperor Chongzhen, Han Emperor Xuan (漢 宣帝) named the place after discovering that the spring water had a sweet taste. Thus, it was called Yecheon (醴泉), meaning "sweet spring."
Yecheon is home to Yecheon Airport (Yecheon Air Force Base) and the Jinho International Archery Field, making it well-known as a city of archery.
