Understand

[edit]

Yeongdong County, located in southern Chungcheongbuk-do, is best known for its vineyards and locally produced wines. The area brands itself as the "home of grapes" in Korea, hosting an annual Grape & Wine Festival each September. The county seat, Yeongdong-eup, is a quiet market town surrounded by valleys and low mountains. Traditional music also plays a key role in local identity, with Yeongdong often referred to as the birthplace of Korean gugak (traditional music).

History

[edit]

Yeongdong’s history is defined by its role as a strategic borderland and a cultural crossroads. During the Three Kingdoms period, the area was a fiercely contested territory between Baekje and Silla due to its location in the heart of the peninsula. Originally known as Gitsu-hyeon under Silla, the region was officially named Yeongdong in 1018 during the Goryeo Dynasty, a name it has carried for over a millennium.

The county is most famously known as the birthplace of Park Yeon (Nangye), one of the three greatest musical geniuses of Korea and a key figure in the development of Gugak (traditional Korean music) during the early Joseon Dynasty. His legacy transformed Yeongdong into the spiritual center of Korean traditional music. In the modern era, the county faced a dark chapter during the Korean War with the No Gun Ri Massacre in 1950, a tragic event that is now commemorated by a memorial park dedicated to peace and human rights. Today, Yeongdong has successfully rebranded itself as the "Vineyard of Korea," utilizing its unique climate to become the nation's leading producer of grapes and premium domestic wine.

Yeongdong features a typical inland continental climate, characterized by significant temperature fluctuations between day and night and across the four seasons. This large diurnal temperature range is the secret behind the exceptionally high sugar content and quality of the local fruits, particularly grapes and persimmons.

  • Spring (Mar–May): Temperatures rise rapidly, and the county becomes covered in blossoms. This is the ideal time for trekking through the mountain trails before the summer humidity sets in.
  • Summer (Jun–Aug): Hot and humid with the majority of the annual rainfall occurring during the monsoon season in July and August. The lush green valleys provide a popular escape for those looking to cool off.
  • Autumn (Sep–Nov): Generally considered the best time to visit. The air is crisp, the skies are clear, and the harvest season brings various festivals. The changing colors on Mt. Minjujisan are a major draw for photographers.
  • Winter (Dec–Feb): Winters are cold and dry, with cold snaps often driven by Siberian high-pressure systems. Snowfall is common in the mountainous areas, creating picturesque winter landscapes.

Talk

[edit]

Standard Korean is widely spoken and understood throughout Yeongdong County. Locals may also use the Chungcheong dialect, known for its slow and relaxed intonation. A few regional expressions, such as "georyeo" (그려, meaning "that's right") or "geosigi" (거시기, a vague word used in place of "that thing"), may be heard in daily conversation, but visitors will generally have no problem communicating in standard Korean.

Get in

[edit]

KTX/ITX and Mugunghwa services stop at Yeongdong Station; there are intercity buses from Cheongju, Daejeon and Seoul. National Route 4 and the Jungbu-naeryuk Expressway provide road access.

By train

[edit]

The train is the most convenient way to reach the county, as the Gyeongbu Line (the main railway artery connecting Seoul and Busan) runs directly through the heart of the town.

  • 36.1705127.78351 Yeongdong Station (영동역), 1, Gyesan-ro. The primary railway hub for the county. Most ITX-Saemaeul and Mugunghwa trains stop here. While most KTX trains bypass this station, a few specialized KTX services (Seoul–Yeongdong) operate daily. It is about 2.5 hours from Seoul Station and 2 hours from Busan. OSM directions
  • 36.2235127.91052 Hwanggan Station (황간역), 4, Hwanggan-ro, Hwanggan-myeon. A smaller station located in the eastern part of the county. It is famous for its "poetry murals" and a small museum within the station. Only Mugunghwa-ho trains stop here, providing access to Wollyu-bong and the Hwanggan area. OSM directions

By bus

[edit]

The intercity bus terminal is located within walking distance of Yeongdong Station, providing easy transfers for regional travel.

  • 36.1735127.78153 Yeongdong Intercity Bus Terminal (영동공용버스터미널), 37, Gyesan-ro. Direct intercity buses run from Seoul Nambu Terminal (approx. 2.5–3 hours, 4 times daily). Frequent local services connect Yeongdong to Daejeon (approx. 50 minutes), Cheongju, and neighboring counties like Muju and Okcheon. OSM directions

By car

[edit]

Yeongdong is easily accessible via the Gyeongbu Expressway (Highway 1), which has two main exits within the county.

  • Yeongdong IC: The best exit for reaching the town center, the Wine Tunnel, and Simcheon-myeon (Gugak area).
  • Hwanggan IC: The best exit for visiting Wollyu-bong, Chupungnyeong, or heading toward Mt. Minjujisan.
  • From Seoul, the drive takes approximately 2.5 hours under normal traffic conditions. From Daejeon, it is a quick 40–50 minute drive.

By plane

[edit]

The nearest airport is Cheongju International Airport (CJJ), located about 1 hour and 15 minutes away by car or train. However, for most international travelers, arriving at Incheon International Airport (ICN) and taking a KTX to Daejeon (then transferring to a local train) is the most efficient route.

Get around

[edit]

Local buses connect the town with surrounding villages; taxis are easy to hail around the station. While the town center is easily walkable, reaching the far-flung vineyards, temples, and mountain valleys requires a bit of planning with local buses, taxis, or a rental car.

By bus

[edit]

The local bus system (often called the "Nong-eo-chon" bus) is the lifeline for budget travelers.

  • The Hub: Most local buses depart from the area near Yeongdong Station and the Intercity Bus Terminal.
  • Routes: Buses are numbered based on their destinations. For example, buses heading to the Gugak Experience Village (Simcheon) or Wollyu-bong (Hwanggan) run several times a day.
  • Payment: Cash and standard Korean transportation cards (T-money, Cashbee) are accepted. Note that intervals can be long (30 minutes to over an hour), so it is wise to photograph the timetable at the terminal before heading out.

By car

[edit]

A car is the most efficient way to explore the county, especially if you plan to visit multiple wineries or remote mountain passes.

  • Scenic Driving: Yeongdong is famous for its winding mountain roads. The Doma-ryeong (도마령) pass, located on the way to Mt. Minjujisan, is a highlight for driving enthusiasts. It features 24 hairpin turns and offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Sobaek mountain range from the summit observatory.
  • Wine Trails: Many of the 40+ local wineries are tucked away in quiet townships like Yanggang-myeon and Sangchon-myeon, where a private vehicle allows for a more flexible "tasting tour" (provided there is a designated driver).

By taxi

[edit]

Taxis are plentiful near Yeongdong Station.

  • Muju-Yeongdong Connections: Taxis are a viable option for shorter trips between the station and nearby attractions like the Wine Tunnel.
  • Call Taxis: In rural areas, it is better to use a local call taxi service or the KakaoT app, though wait times may be longer than in major cities.

By bicycle

[edit]

For those who enjoy slow travel, the paths along the Yeongdong-cheon Stream and the Geumgang River offer peaceful scenery.

  • Yangsan-myeon Path: The area around the "Yangsan Eight Scenic Spots" has relatively flat roads near the river, making it suitable for casual cycling.
  • Road Cycling: Serious cyclists often challenge themselves on the steep climbs of Chupungnyeong or the road leading up to Mt. Minjujisan.

On foot

[edit]
  • Town Center: The area around Yeongdong-eup is compact. You can easily walk from the train station to the traditional market and the Yeongdong Wine Tunnel (approx. 15-20 minutes).
  • Trekking: Once you reach the main scenic spots like Wollyu-bong or Deogyusan (nearby), walking along the well-marked "Dulle-gil" trails is the best way to soak in the natural beauty.

Stay safe

[edit]

Yeongdong County is generally safe with very low crime rates. Visitors are unlikely to encounter any problems beyond the usual precautions needed anywhere in Korea.

Weather, however, can present some hazards. Summers are hot and humid, with occasional heavy rains that can cause flash flooding in valleys. Winters can be icy, and rural roads may be slippery after snow. If hiking in the surrounding mountains such as Minjujisan, bring proper gear and be prepared for sudden weather changes.

As in most rural areas, medical facilities are limited outside the county seat, so consider bringing basic medication and allow extra travel time in case of emergencies.
