It's hard for a station to get better than Zürich HB (ZLP, sometimes ZRH). Zürich HB (short for Zürich Hauptbahnhof, lit. Zurich Main Station) is the main station of Zurich and is Switzerland's largest station.
The station is huge: it's a hub for all kinds of long-distance trains from all over Europe, intercity and regional SBB trains, and forms the core of Zurich's S-Bahn and tram system. The station is operated and directly managed by the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB CFF FFS).
Understand
[edit]History
[edit]In 1847, Zurich HB was the terminus of the first Swiss railway line, running from Zurich to Baden. It therefore makes it one of the oldest railway stations in Switzerland. The station hall, built in 1871, no longer serves as a departure point and is now the largest covered space in the city, with the above-ground platforms now beginning beyond the hall.
Layout
[edit]
There are four sections of Zürich HB.
Surface platforms (Main Hall) (Platforms 3–18) The main platforms where most long-distance international trains call (including TGV, ICE, RJX, sleeper, and most EuroCity services), as well as Intercity, InterRegio and RegioExpress. Some S-Bahn services – namely S21 S24 S25 S42 , also unusually use these platforms. It is a terminus station, with the platforms directly next to the main hall.
SZU Station (Platforms 21 and 22) An underground pair of platforms run and operated by the SZU (Sihltal Zürich Uetliberg Bahn), who run S4 to Sihlwald, and S10 to Uetliberg. It's connected to the rest of the station via a long concourse through the ShopVille centre, and the tracks between S4 S10 are not connected to the rest of the station's tracks.
Bahnhof Löwenstrasse (Weinberg Tunnel) (Platforms 31–34) Has two track pairs underneath Löwenstrasse, built to alleviate capacity constraints. Trains headed north from this station will pass through Oerlikon, whilst trains headed south will pass through either Altstetten or Wiedikon. Lines served include S2 S8 S14 S19 , with some EuroCity, Intercity and InterRegio trains also stopping here.
Bahnhof Museumstrasse (Hirschengraben Tunnel) (Platforms 41–44) Another set of two track pairs underneath Museumstrasse. As of 2026, this section serves the lines S3 S5 S6 S7 S9 S11 S12 S15 S16 S20 S23 . Trains headed southbound from this terminal will pass Stadelhofen after Zurich HB, northbound to Hardbrücke.
