Arvidsjaur (Ume Sami: Árviesjávrrie, Pite Sami: Árvehávvre) is a small town in Norrbotten County in Sweden. Known as a winter test environment used by car manufacturers, the town is also a magnet for a variety of winter outdoor sports.

Arvidsjaur is a central place for the surrounding region, largest within 100 km distance. It is the The name comes from Sami Árviesjávrrie meaning "Lake giving plenty (of fish)". Important industries are forestry and winter car testing. The town has some 4,000 inhabitants, the 5,660-km² municipality some 6,000.

The temperatures are variable with daily high average 19 °C (66 °F) in July and −7 °C (19 °F) in January.

Get in

Arvidsjaur has an airport with flights from Stockholm. It is possible to book a shared taxi, own taxi or a rental car to go to Arvidsjaur. A cheaper option would probably be flying to Skellefteå or Luleå and take the bus. Search for local buses at https://ltnbd.se

Train/bus combination can be used. There are direct trains from Stockholm to Östersund or Jörn, from where there are direct buses to Arvidsjaur. Search for train/bus combinations at https://sj.se[dead link]

In the summer time there are tourist trains from Östersund and Gällivare, going on Inlandsbanan.

To drive to Arvidsjaur, one can use the E45, or road 362-365 from Örnsköldsvik (at E4). Road 95 comes in from Skellefteå in the south-east and continues via Arjeplog to Norway, reaching E6 near Bodø.

Lappstaden
  • Arvidsjaurs lappstad. The 'church towns' were used by churchgoers from afar. This one has about thirty timber houses and some fifty härbre (a type of outhouse). The houses were built and owned by their user and are still privately owned. The lappstad was founded in 1606, when a church was built and a court founded at Arvidsjaur. The current site was established in 1826, as a new church was built. The oldest härbre is from the 18th century and the newest from 1996, built at a course of old workmanship. The church town is used the first Sunday in June and the last weekend in August (at Storstämningshelgen). (Q47784693) on Wikidata
