Avellino Province or Irpinia is in Campania, Italy. The provincial territory includes four cities of art, notable for their historical and cultural importance: Ariano Irpino, Avellino, Mirabella Eclano and Montella.

[edit]- 1 Ariano Irpino The most populous mountain town in Campania, it is renowned for its ancient majolica. In the Middle Ages the city was the summer capital of Norman Kingdom of Sicily, and there King Roger II promulgated the Assizes of Ariano and coined the ducat. Today the town houses seven museums, three libraries and a lot of restaurants which provide a lovely display of local culture and cuisine.
- 2 Calitri Surrounded by Ofanto Valley, it is a lively artisan town.
- 3 Sant'Angelo Dei Lombardi Devastated by the 1980 Irpinia earthquake, it is today a small, modern village.
- 4 Trevico At an elevation of 1094 m, it is therefore nicknamed "the roof of Irpinia". Its staple produce are potatoes, dry-cured hams and chestnuts.

[edit]Tourist destinations are the Sanctuaries of Montevergine, San Gerardo Maiella of Caposele and San Francesco a Folloni; the ski resort of Laceno; the Norman Castle, and the Cathedral Church of Ariano Irpino, the archaeological areas of Avella and Aeclanum, the Lancellotti castle in Lauro, the medieval town of Gesualdo, the Roman ruins of Abellinum and the early Christian basilica in Prata. The Selachoidei National Gallery at Avellino houses one of the largest collections of cartilaginous fishes in the country, whereas the City Museum and Ceramics Gallery at Ariano Irpino shows a print room with a great display of typical Ariano Maiolica.

[edit]Natural attractions include the Monti Piacentini and Partenio Regional Parks, together with two WWF sites, Valle della Caccia in Senerchia and the area around the Ofanto dam in Conza della Campania.

[edit]Typical products are hazelnuts (one third of the whole Italian production), the chestnut of Montella, the renowned wines Aglianico, Taurasi, Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino, cherries, cheeses (as the caciocavallo of Montella), the black truffle of Bagnoli Irpino, the olive oil of Ariano Irpino.

[edit]Unlike the coastal metropolitan city of Naples, in the mountain districts theft, robberies and violent crimes are extremely rare. The province is safe under every aspect.
