Badoc is a town in Ilocos Norte. Situated at the boundary with Ilocos Sur province, it is famous for being the birthplace of two of the Philippines' national heroes, and is a pilgrimage spot for one of the most venerated images of the Virgin Mary in the Ilocos Region.
Understand
[edit]Badoc is one of the oldest settlements in Ilocos Norte, having been founded by the Spanish in 1572. It is known in Philippine history as the origin of the Luna brothers Juan and Antonio, the former being one of the leading painters in the Philippines, and the latter one of the leading commanders of the Philippine war of independence against the Americans. It is also the site of the only Roman Catholic basilica in Ilocos Norte, featuring the Virgen Milagrosa, an image of the Virgin Mary that was believed to have originated from Japan and was found washed up in the town's shores.
Get in
[edit]Badoc is along Route 2 (Manila North Road), which skirts the southeastern edge of downtown. Buses also ply this highway, with some bus companies operating limited direct services from Metro Manila.
The nearest airport is in Laoag.
Get around
[edit]Tricycles are the main form of transportation in town, particularly as downtown Badoc is further inland from the coast.
