Colònia de Sant Jordi is a resort on the coast of Migjorn de Mallorca, the south of that island. In Castilian Spanish it's Colonia de San Jorge, but always simply called Colònia.
This was a tiny fishing village, with its fields laid out as a model farm (hence colonia), until the arrival of 20th century tourism. Its resident population was 2860 in 2024, greatly swelled by summer visitors. It's part of the municipality of Ses Salines (named for the coastal salt pans) but has far outgrown that inland town.
Get in
[edit]By road from Palma city and airport head east on MA-19 past Llucmajor to Campos, then take Ma-6040 south to Colònia, 52 km in all.
TIB buses link the towns:
- From the airport Bus A51 runs hourly to S'Arenal, Llucmajor and Campos, taking 45 min.
- Bus 501 runs from Palma city every 30 min to Llucmajor and Campos, continuing to Felanitx and Manacor.
- Change at Campos for Bus 517 hourly to Colònia and Santanyí. That takes 20 min, so the travel time from Palma is about 70 min.
1 Plaça Constitució is the bus turnaround.
Get around
[edit]The town is small and walkable. Local buses ply to Ses Salines and Santanyí.
A dozen taxi operators serve Colònia.
See
[edit]
- 1 Aquarium Cabrera, Gabriel Roca, ☏ +34 971 176124. Daily 10:00-17:00. Small aquarium. It's named for the Cabrera isles as that's the nearest place to see the abundance of Med marine life before it was fished out.

- 2 Port de Campos is the marina. Boat trips sail from here.
- 3 Parroquia de Sant Jordi is the parish church, corner of Major and Gabriel Roca. It's modern.
- 4 Far de la Colònia is the lighthouse, a tower reached by boardwalk.
- 5 Salines de s'Avall are salt pans, in a lagoon used for this since the 4th century BC. The water is in pastel shades of pink and orange from salt-tolerant plankton. The factory and shop are south end of the lagoon on Av Primavera.
- 6 Na Guardis is the largest of the scrubby islets a short way offshore. They're within swimming or paddle-board distance, but beware of mad bats in speedboats and jet-skis.
Further out
[edit]
- 7 Botanicactus, Ses Salines, ☏ +34 971 649494. Daily 10:30-16:30. Extensive cactus garden. Some visitors reckon it's run down and overpriced. Adult €11.

- 8 Els Antigors is a talayotic village, with half a dozen Iron Age dwellings. It's tumbledown and you'll probably have it to yourself. Nevertheless it's the best local example - there are hundreds across Mallorca but in intensively farmed regions like Migjorn most have been swept away to clear the fields.
- 9 Cabrera is an island wildlife reserve reached by boat trips from Colònia. No camping and you must return the same day.
Do
[edit]- Beach: the town is on a rocky headland. Platja des Port north of the marina is sandy and sheltered. Platja Estanys is a long quieter beach north of the salt lagoons.
- Scuba diving: no local school or dive shack, but trips for experienced dives come from Palma to reach Cabrera.
