MediaWiki talk:Uploadtext Voyage Tips and guide

You can check the original Wikivoyage article Here

Could the pointer to Wikivoyage Shared be made much, much more explicit? Something like this: (WT-en) Jpatokal 00:14, 11 May 2006 (EDT)

Please upload images to Wikivoyage Shared, not here. This form should be used only to upload English-specific content (eg. maps and diagrams labeled in English).

Some things to think about:

* All images must be compatible with our copyleft. If you are not the original creator of the image, please be sure that you have permission to use the image here. Note that images from Wikipedia are often licensed under the GFDL only and not compatible with Wikivoyage.
* Use JPEG for photos and PNG for diagrams and maps.
* Diagrams and maps should also have a vector-format source file. We prefer SVG, but other vector formats (Adobe Illustrator, PostScript) are better than nothing.
* Avoid people in photos, unless you have their permission to publish their image.

Other information is in our image policy. You can also find out how to add an image to a page once it's uploaded. To view or search previously uploaded images go to the list of uploaded files. Uploads and deletions are also logged in the upload log.

Oops, didn't realize I had edit privileges. Text changed, edit at will. (WT-en) Jpatokal 00:20, 11 May 2006 (EDT)
All admins can change any article in the MediaWiki: namespace, and the update will happen immediately. However, be reminded that a change to any MediaWiki: message clears the cache of all articles. So, please minimize these changes. --(WT-en) Evan 09:15, 11 May 2006 (EDT)
So, I rolled back this change. I agree that we are getting to the point where we want people to upload to Shared, but the process is kind of a pain right now (since you have to create a new account to do it). I don't think our message right now should be "Either upload to Shared, or don't upload at all."
One of my main development efforts right now is enabling single-sign-on across all the different wikis, which I think will make this process painless. Right now, I'd rather that people uploaded to en: than that they got lost in Shared: and decided not to contribute at all. --(WT-en) Evan 09:31, 11 May 2006 (EDT)
Are we still at the same place now, a year and a half later? Or can we put up a big request asking people to upload directly to shared? I for one get pretty frustrated when I'm trying to add photos to other language versions and see that I'd have to actually download them from :en and reupload them somewhere else just to use Wikivoyage images. I'd argue that even English language-specific files belong on shared, so that other language versions can at least find them without having to search this version (for use as a tracing base, creative inspiration, or what have you). --(WT-en) Peter Talk 15:35, 25 November 2007 (EST)
I agree, it's time we make upload to shared a set policy and amend the upload page to reflect that. How about something simple like Template:SharedUploadNotice? --(WT-en) NJR_ZA 16:08, 25 November 2007 (EST)

Wikivoyage:Copyleft has moved to :shared:Copyleft

[edit]

This (protected) page contains a link to Project:Copyleft which now needs updating to point to Wikivoyage:Copyleft ~ 203.189.134.3 13:11, 13 October 2007 (EDT)

Done, and thanks for your effort. -- (WT-en) Colin 13:16, 13 October 2007 (EDT)

Big text funny

[edit]

I just clicked the en upload button by accident and saw this message, and got a big laugh. Someone would have to be pretty audacious to ignore it! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 21:40, 9 September 2008 (EDT)

Non-free files should also have a non-free license tag

[edit]

The text says that "All uploaded images are automatically licensed under CC-by-SA 3.0, unless otherwise specified.". The CC-license indicate that the file is free and free files should be uploaded to Commons. But the files uploaded locally are most likely non-free so I think that the files should have a license tag to explain that the file is not truely free.

If you take a photo of a copyrighted statue the statue is non-free but the rights to the photo itself coul be a cc-license. So we could use a license like cc-by-sa-3.0.

I therefore suggest to change the text to something like this: "All uploaded images are automatically licensed under CC-by-SA 3.0, unless otherwise specified. If the the image shows a copyrighted statue etc. the CC-by-SA 3.0-license only apply to the photographers rights to the photo itself.". --MGA73 (talk) 19:09, 13 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Also see MediaWiki talk:Licenses. --MGA73 (talk) 19:21, 13 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
All photos uploaded here are non-free (because they are derived from non-free content), but the photos themselves must be CC licensed. We don't allow photos that are either not CC licensed or are not derivative works of copyrighted work. Photos that should be uploaded to Commons are just deleted, as the uploader clearly is not paying attention to the requirements placed on uploads. --Peter Talk 19:32, 13 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Well I'm not sure that all files are non-free (I see some free files on Special:ListFiles/Peterfitzgerald for example). But my point is that we should not upload non-free files with a CC-license only. --MGA73 (talk) 20:18, 13 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Agreed, they should all be tagged explicitly as non-free as derivative works of copyrighted work. --Peter Talk 01:08, 14 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Some changes

[edit]

I modified the text more than slightly, see also Wikivoyage:Travellers' pub:

• There are some exceptions other than the EDP that warrant local upload, e.g. the DotM banners. They should be added to the image policy.
• More language about licences, linking Category:License tags.
• Removed "personal photo for your user page", as those should be uploaded on Commons.
• Added list of any articles on which the photograph will appear, as that is a requirement in the EDP.
