Menominee is a city in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is across the Menominee River from Marinette, Wisconsin.

    Understand

    [edit]

Menominee was inhabited by the native American group of the same name, translating to "Wild Rice" in English, until 1836 where the Menominee and other native American tribes were moved west to other reservations, namely the Menominee Indian Reservation north of Shawano, Wisconsin. Menominee become more renowned in the mid-late 19th century as a lumber town much like with Marinette to the south, even going on to produce more lumber than any other city in the United States at the time, though the lumber industry waned around the 1910s. Since then, the industry has shifted towards manufacturing and tourism and the population has since been declining since the 1970 peak of 11,000 residents.

People entering Menominee- and by that matter, Michigan- from the south will probably be on US 41, the main north-south route in town. US 41 connects Menominee with it's southern twin city, Marinette, to the immediate south and further on to Green Bay, while taking a 65 mile course to the north for Escanaba. M-35 provides a shorter alignment to Escanaba at about 55 miles.
