Newburgh is a small, riverside city in Orange County, New York.

[edit]Located on the west banks of the mighty Hudson River with a population of 28,856 in 2020, Newburgh is a city with a long history. Once an important retail and industrial community on the river some 60 mi (97 km) north of the City of New York, Newburgh fell on hard times during the latter half of the 20th century, when the city's industrial base diminished, racial conflicts began heating up, and the urban renewal projects designed to combat the issues in the 1960s and 1970s ran into trouble.
Despite all this, Newburgh is home to many incredible historic landmarks and some absolutely breathtaking views of the Hudson and the surrounding area. It is also a very diverse community, rich in many different cultures, and is home to Mount Saint Mary College – an excellent liberal arts college.

[edit]The small 1 Stewart International Airport is located 5 mi (8.0 km) east of Newburgh in and has limited flights by American, Delta and JetBlue Airways.
There is a ferry which crosses the Hudson from Newburgh, which connects with nearby Beacon and its Metro-North station. Sailings are limited to serve commuters, with departures at 5-9AM and 5-8:30PM. 2 Newburgh Ferry Terminal is next to downtown and the marina. Newburgh has no railway services in itself, but Metro North serves Beacon during peak hours with its Hudson Line from Grand Central Terminal in New York City. Beacon station is next to the ferry landing, allowing for an easy transfer.

[edit]While there are some very nice areas of the city, Newburgh is still a city, and there are many areas which suffer from poverty, drug use, and gang violence – in addition to illegal immigration. Much of the violence in the city is not targeted against tourists, and so if you use common sense and mind your own business, you will be fine.
At night, it is best to stick to a car if you must move about the area – and it is equally-wise to stick to the most heavily-used routes and to avoid venturing into an area which appears shade (this latter tip is also applicable for during the day). If you must walk at night, be sure to avoid walking alone – especially if you are a woman.
