Quebrada del Condorito National Park is a protected natural area in the Pampas region of Argentina. Known for its dramatic vistas of deep gorges, sheer cliffs, and open spaces, the park harbors a surprising biodiversity. It preserves an ecosystem of the Sierras Grandes mountains. It is a transitional area with steeper mountain grades to the west and more open areas to the east. Several endangered species live in the park which is difficult to access, lightly visited, yet has several hiking trails and backcountry camping opportunities.

    Understand

    [edit]

The park covers an area of more than 37,000 hectares.

    History

    [edit]

The park was declared part of the Argentina national parks system in 1996.

    Landscape

    [edit]

The Quebrada del Condorito canyon is a deep gorge in the center of the park and at the higher altitudes of the mountain range. It is a scenic bowl surrounded by cliffs and rugged Rock formations. It contrasts sharply with the lower plains that surround the small group of mountains.

    Flora and fauna

The park's plant life consists of several species that are well adapted to harsh high-altitude domains. Plants include grasslands, small shrubs and forbs. Wildlife surveys in the park counted 176 bird species, 36 mammals (including the photogenic guanao), 21 reptiles (including the Achala green lizard), and 24 amphibians.

The park provides important habitat for the Andean condor. The majestic bird faced dwindling populations during the twentieth century but more recent conservation efforts have led to a reversal in numbers.

    Climate

    [edit]

The park has a temperate mountain climate with cooler temperatures at higher elevations. Snow is common during the winter months of May to August. Lightning strikes are common at higher elevations.
