    Understand

    [edit]

The first evidence of human presence in Ripoll dates back to the Bronze Age (1500-600 BC). With the reconquest of the territory between Cerdanya and Barcelonès by Count Guifré el Pelós (840-897), the repopulation of the area began in 879, using two monasteries as attractions: Santa Maria de Ripoll and the monastery of Sant Joan de les Abadesses (887).

Built at the request of Count Wifredo el Velloso in 888, it is a notable example of the Romanesque architecture of the area, although it has undergone various extensions over the centuries. It once had a large architectural complex, of which only the portico, from the 11th century, is preserved, in which passages from the Bible can be seen, and the cloister, and one of the few Romanesque cloisters with two floors. The current building is the result of the restoration carried out at the end of the 19th century, due to the partial destruction caused by an earthquake after the Carlist wars, which devastated the entire city. The large courtyard consists of a fountain located right in the middle of the courtyard, surrounded by small carved bushes and a kind of gallery surrounding the fountain, a very quiet place where the monks spoke and read. The main façade is a must-see. €7.5, reduced €5.5, under 18 years €3.5. Santa Maria de Ripoll (Q2116598) on Wikidata Santa Maria de Ripoll on Wikipedia
