São João de Meriti is a municipality of Baixada Fluminense, in the Grande Rio region, Rio de Janeiro state.

[edit]São João de Meriti is one of the largest municipalities of the region of Baixada Fluminense. It has the highest demographic density in the state of Rio de Janeiro, and the second highest in Brazil. The municipality has two main nucleus, where most economic activity is concentrated: Downtown São João de Meriti and the neighborhood of Vilar dos Teles; the latter is also where the municipal administrative headquarters is located.

[edit]From the Rio's downtown area, one can go to São João de Meriti by using urban bus, van or train lines. Although no subway lines enter the municipality of São João de Meriti, many people use the subway Line 2 to go to this municipality, since its final station is located in Pavuna (a neighborhood in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro), just a few meters from the Rio de Janeiro-São João de Meriti municipal boundary and the São João city center. The visitor can take the subway in the Cinelândia, Carioca, Uruguaiana, Presidente Vargas (Saara), Central do Brasil or Cidade Nova stations to go from the Rio de Janeiro downtown area to the region of Pavuna/São João de Meriti. Most bus lines to São João de Meriti depart from Terminal Américo Fontenelle, in Gamboa. The trains depart from Central do Brasil train station. The vans to São João also depart from the Central do Brasil region.
The main road access to São João de Meriti for those coming from the Rio de Janeiro city center is the BR-116 highway (Via Dutra).

- Antiga Estrada de Ferro Rio d'Ouro (Old Rio d'Ouro Railway) - A 19th century railway built to assist in the construction of water mains for the city of Rio de Janeiro from the springs of the mountain range called Serra do Tinguá, in Baixada Fluminense. The purpose of the railway was to transport materials and workers during this construction. The building of the Rio d'Ouro Railway was concluded on 1882.
- Praça da Estação Coelho da Rocha (Square of Coelho da Rocha railway station) - A square in front of the Coelho da Rocha train station and close to the Belford Roxo municipal boundary.
- Feirinha da Pavuna (Pavuna's street market) - A well-known street market located between the neighborhood of Pavuna, in the capital's North Zone, and the São João de Meriti city center.
