    Alfombra do Corpus

Sarria is by far the most often picked starting point to do a Camino de Santiago. Over 130,000 pilgrims started here in 2024. Many pilgrims choose Sarria because the distance from this point to Santiago allows them to cover the necessary kilometres to get the Compostela, a certificate. However, there are alternative starting points; see Way of St. James.

In holy years (next ones 2027, 2032, 2038 and 2049) there is up to the double number of pilgrims. If you don't have a religious motivation, the holy years are better avoided, as finding accommodation will be more difficult.

    Get in

    [edit]

The nearest airport is the one of Santiago de Compostela. Others are in Vigo and A Coruña. The most destinations are served by the airport of Porto.

From the Santiago airport there is one direct Monbus daily at 11:15am. Otherwise take a Monbus or ALSA bus from the city of Santiago to Lugo and change there to a bus or train to Sarria. There are also trains from Santiago: Take one to Ourense and change there to a train to Sarria.

From Vigo take an intercity bus to Santiago or a train to Ourense and continue from there.

From A Coruña there are direct trains to Sarria. Otherwise take an intercity bus from A Coruña to Lugo and from there an intercity bus to Sarria.

From the airport of Porto there are direct Flixbus rides to Santiago de Compostela. The bus changes its bus line in Vigo, but you don't need to change the bus. From Santiago continue as stated above.

The Asturias airport is not far away. Still it is not that convenient to travel between that airport and Sarria. If you want to do it anyway: Take an ALSA bus from the airport to Oviedo. There take an ALSA bus to Lugo. And from Lugo a bus or train to Sarria. From the Asturias airport to Sarria you can also check Blablacar rides. Some drivers offer to pick you up at the 1 bp gas station (at the bus stop "CTA 05109"). Blablacar also shows you rides that go along the highway A-8 near the airport. You can ask those Blablacar drivers to pick you up at the airport or at that gas station. The bp gas station is 3 km away from the airport.
