Silchar (Bengali: শিলচর Śilcar, Assamese: শিলচৰ Śilcar) is the largest city of the Barak Valley region of Assam, India.

[edit]Bengali and Meitei are the official languages of Silchar and the rest of the Barak Valley. However, as it is in the state of Assam, Assamese is the state official language that is used in state government offices. In addition, most well-educated locals will also be able to speak Hindi and English.

[edit]- 3 Silchar NFR SCL (Bhasha Shahid Station). The railway station with memories of the Bengali language movement in Assam. In 1961, the government of Assam issued a circular making Assamese mandatory, prompting protests from Bengalis in the Barak Valley. On 19 May 1961, the Assam Police opened fire on unarmed protesters at Silchar station, resulting in 11 deaths. The state government later withdrew the circular, and Bengali became an official language in the Barak Valley region. Every year, 19 May is celebrated as Bhasha Shahid Dibas to commemorate the incident.

[edit]- 1 Khaspur (20 km north-easr of Silchar). The Capital of Old Cachari Kingdom. Beautiful place with the ruins of the fort used by the Cachari Kings.
- 2 Badarpur Fort. A historic Mughal-era military fortification located along the south bank of the Barak River. Built in 1612, the fort marked the official boundary separating the sprawling Mughal Empire from the neighbouring Kachari Kingdom. The fort comes in with high defensive walls, and multiple security watchtowers.
