Consecrated on December 10, 1123, by Bishop Ramon Guillem of Roda. First mentioned in a 1064 sale-exchange by Counts of Pallars Sobirà (Artau I and Llúcia) to Counts of Pallars Jussà (Ramon IV and Valença), alongside Erill Castle. Built over an 11th-century predecessor, retaining some fragments like south wall and lower apse. Shared parish with Santa Maria de Taüll; attempted Erill lords' monastic nucleus. Passed to Urgell Diocese in Late Middle Ages under co-rectors system. Key restorations: 1919-1922 mural extractions to MNAC (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya in Barcelona), 1970s, 2000-2001 (new murals discovered). €5. History: Originating from a 1064 sale-exchange by Counts of Pallars Sobirà (Artau I, Llúcia) to Counts of Pallars Jussà (Ramon V, Valença), alongside Erill Castle. Likely built early 12th century over possible 11th-century predecessor. From the 18th century, it became Taüll's sole parish while Sant Climent served the cemetery; earlier, they co-shared. Major 18th-century Baroque reforms converted lateral naves to chapels, added barrel vault, transept dome with lantern, and sacristy replacing south absidiola. 1970s restoration reverted to 12th-century form: exposed cylindrical columns dividing naves, wooden two-slope roof. 1996 archaeological excavation uncovered plaza necropolis; 2007-2008 consolidation works.
Description: Three-nave basilica with semicircular triapsidal head, cylindrical columns separating naves. Smooth exterior walls except apses with Lombard arcades, lesenes, saw-tooth friezes. Square campanar tower (four floors, twin windows under arcades) rises over epistle nave, slightly tilted, with repeated decoration per face: blind arches on socle, varying windows upward, Lombard motifs on top three floors.
Interior and murals: Once fully mural-covered; originals (Epiphany in central apse with enthroned Virgin and Child in mandorla; Judgment on south/west walls) detached 1919-1923 to MNAC Barcelona, protecting from export threats. In situ replicas: central apse (1958-1960), south wall (2013). Recent restorations revealed new fragments. Preserved elements include altarpiece frontal (MNAC).

Events

[edit]
    • The Fallas festival lights up Vall de Boí's summer nights with ancient fire rituals tied to the solstice, purification, and agrarian cycles. Young villagers (falleros) craft massive pine torches—two-meter resinous trunks bound with wire—or single-piece rantiners, igniting them at high mountain "lighthouses" visible from below.
    • Shoulder-high, the blazing procession snakes down zigzag paths like a fiery river, reaching village squares for communal bonfires. Dances erupt around the flames, blending mysticism with revelry that lasts till dawn. Each hamlet hosts its own: Durro , Boí , Barruera, Erill la Vall, Taüll , Pla de l'Ermita.
    • Originally Fallas happen on June 23rd (saint john eve), but lately every village takes a different date, so more tourists can attend.
    • UNESCO-recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage ("Summer Solstice Fire Festivals in the Pyrenees"), it unites 63 Pyrenean locales across Catalonia, Aragon, France, and Andorra—warding evil, honoring sun gods, ensuring bountiful harvests. In Boí Valley's Romanesque heartland, Fallas fuses pagan roots with Christian saints' feasts, drawing crowds to its primal energy amid Aigüestortes peaks and UNESCO churches.
  • La Pila de Taüll. On Taüll's third Sunday in July, the Dance of Sant Isidre unfolds: youths encircle the saint, grabbing his "garllà" cake as he fends them with his staff. This sparks La Pila—a three-tier human tower in the square. The top man greets four directions, then dances inverted to music. Legend recalls drought-stricken Taüll folk praying to Isidre, who arrived with wine and cake—snatched by unrecognized hungry lads.
  • Ball Pla in Taüll & Durro: During Taüll and Durro's main village festivals, locals perform the Ball Pla. Mixed pairs—married man with single woman, single man with married woman—line up single file, advancing as women spin gracefully. The formation fans out across the square, couples side by side, women twirling amid accelerating rhythms. Pairs realign and circle the plaza's edge, blending tradition with communal joy in this lively Pyrenean celebration.
