Taebaek (태백) is a city in the southern part of Gangwon, with abundant tourism resources including Tae-baek Mountain. It's a highland city where two of South Korea's four major rivers, the Han River and the Nakdong River, originate.

Districts

[edit]

Taebaek is divided into eight administrative neighborhoods (dong), each offering a unique glimpse into the city's coal mining heritage and high-altitude natural beauty.

Administrative district of Taebaek
  Hwangji-dong (황지동)
The central business district and transportation hub of Taebaek. It houses Hwangji Pond, the legendary source of the Nakdong River, and the city's main markets and bus terminal.
  Samsu-dong (삼수동)
Located in the northern part of the city. Famous for Samsuryeong, the watershed point for three major rivers, and Maebongsan Mountain (Windy Hill), known for its vast highland cabbage fields and wind turbines. It also includes Chujeon Station, the highest railway station in South Korea.
  Hwangyeon-dong (황연동)
A mountainous area featuring Yongyeon Cave, the highest cave in Korea located at 920 meters above sea level. It serves as a key point for hikers exploring the surrounding peaks.
  Sangjang-dong (상장동)
A residential area that has gained fame for the Sangjang-dong Mural Village, where colorful wall paintings depict the daily lives and history of the local coal miners.
  Mungoksodo-dong (문곡소도동)
The main gateway to Taebaeksan National Park. This district is home to the Taebaek Coal Museum, one of the largest of its kind, and several historic shrines including Dangunseongjeon.
  Cheoram-dong (철암동)
A district that preserves the raw atmosphere of the mining boom era. The Cheoram Coal Mine History Village features preserved "stilt houses" (kkachibal-jib) along the riverside, offering a unique architectural look into the past.
  Jangseong-dong (장성동)
Historically the heart of the mining industry in Taebaek. While now largely residential, it maintains a quiet, nostalgic atmosphere with several industrial heritage sites scattered throughout the neighborhood.
  Gumunso-dong (구문소동)
Named after Gumunso, a natural wonder where the Hwangji-cheon stream has eroded a hole through a massive rock formation. The Taebaek Paleozoic Museum is also located here, showcasing the region's ancient geological history.

Taebaek is located in the southern interior of Gangwon State. As of 2016, the population was 47,333.

History

[edit]

Ihe region once belonged to Siljikguk (실직국; 悉直國), a tribal state within the Jinhan confederacy during the Samhan period, with its capital in what is now Sajik-dong, Samcheok. When Siljikguk fell to King Jangsu of Goguryeo, the area became Goguryeo territory.

During the Silla Dynasty, under King Jijung, Siljikju (실직주; 悉直州) was established here. It was later renamed Bukryoeng (북령) under King Muyeol, becoming a militarily strategic point. The name was changed to Samcheok-gun during the reign of King Gyeongdeok. In the Joseon Dynasty, the area was part of Gangwon-do and Samcheok-gun in Gangneung-bu.

Modern Taebaek City was formed in 1981 when Hwangji-eup(Eup is a town-level administrative division) and Jangseong-eup were merged from Samcheok County.

Climate

[edit]

Since meteorological observations began in 1985, Taebaek has only recorded a single tropical night (the lowest temperature ever recorded was 25.7°C on August 9, 2013), making it a cool place even in summer. The climate is so cool that in areas around Chujeon Station, which sits at 855 meters above sea level, or Dumundongjae Pass, at 1,268 meters, heating is needed in the early morning even in summer.

Get in

[edit]

By plane

[edit]

From Incheon or Gimpo International Airport (ICN or GMP), there is a direct intercity bus from the airports to Taebaek. These only operate four times a day, so it may be more efficient to enter Seoul by bus or AREX and use the more numerous bus and rail connection from there.

By bus

[edit]

All intercity buses arrive at Taebaek Bus Terminal. There are connections to most cities in the capital region and the rest of Gangwon, as well as Busan, Daejeon, and Gwangju.

From Seoul, an intercity bus to Taebaek departs from Dong Seoul Bus Terminal every 30 minutes. The bus will make one or two stops along the way before reaching Taebaek. The trip takes around three hours. There are milk run buses that makes over 20 stops as well, which are not advisable as they will arrive later than the next direct bus. ₩24,600 or ₩31,900 depending on bus class.

By train

[edit]

The main train stop is Taebaek Station located right next to the bus terminal. Dongbaeksan and Cheoram Stations are also within city limits but probably are not convenient for travellers.

From Seoul, six trains depart from Cheongnyangni station each day to stop at Taebaek en route to Gangneung. The trip costs ₩15,200 and takes 3 hours and 40 minutes.

From other cities direct rail connections are rare and undesirable compared to buses. There is one daily train that leaves from Busan (Bujeon Station) and arrives Cheoram a whopping 6 hours later. Two trains run between Daegu (Dongdaegu Station) and Cheoram and Dongbaeksan Stations each day as well.

  • 37.1706128.98931 Taebaek Station (태백역), 13, Gangwon-nambu-ro, +82 1544-7788. The city's main gateway.
    • ITX-Maum: The fastest option from Seoul (Cheongnyangni Station), taking approximately 3 hours. It is a modern semi-high-speed train introduced in 2023.
    • Mugunghwa-ho: The frequent but slower service from Seoul (Cheongnyangni Station), taking 3.5 to 4 hours. It offers great views of the mountain terrain. OSM directions
  • 37.1326129.03412 Cheoram Station (철암역), 408, Dongtaebaek-ro. The southern hub of Taebaek and the starting point for tourist trains. Baekdu-daegan Canyon Train (V-train): A famous retro-style tourist train with glass-walled carriages for sightseeing. It runs through the most rugged parts of the canyon toward Buncheon and Yeongju. OSM directions

By bus

[edit]
  • 37.1718128.98821 Taebaek Intercity Bus Terminal (태백시외버스터미널), 17, Hwangji-ro 15-gil, +82 33-552-3100. The bus terminal is located right next to the railway station, making transfers easy. Buses are often more frequent than trains.
    • From Seoul: Direct buses depart from Dong Seoul Bus Terminal (Gangbyeon Station, Line 2) every 30–50 minutes. The journey takes about 3 hours and 10 minutes.
    • From Busan: Buses from Busan Central Bus Terminal take approximately 5–6 hours.
    • From Daegu: Buses from Daegu Bukbu Terminal take about 3 hours and 30 minutes. OSM directions

By car

[edit]

Driving to Taebaek offers some of the most beautiful mountain vistas in Korea, though roads can be winding and steep.

  • From Seoul: Take the Yeongdong Expressway (No. 50) towards Wonju, then switch to the Jungang Expressway (No. 55) toward Jecheon. Follow National Route 38, which is a well-maintained four-lane highway that leads directly into Taebaek.
  • From the East Coast: Follow National Route 35 from Gangneung or Samcheok, which provides a scenic route through the highlands.

Get around

[edit]

The city center (Hwangji-dong) is compact and walkable, but most major attractions like Taebaeksan National Park, 365 Safe Town, and Cheoram are spread out across different valleys. Public transportation is reliable but requires some planning.

By bus

[edit]

All city bus lines start and end at the bus terminal. Buses with three-digit line numbers are the same routes as their two-letter counterparts, only more expensive. The most commonly used bus lines for travellers are 1 (11,12,110,120), 4 (41, 410). Bus 1 and 4 are circular lines that loop (counterclockwise and clockwise respectively) around the city limits every 20 minutes to reach the main villages.

  • Payment: Most buses accept rechargeable transportation cards like T-money and Cashbee, as well as contactless credit cards.
  • Major Routes:
    • Terminal to Taebaeksan (Danggol): Buses run approximately every 30–60 minutes. Look for buses bound for "Danggol" (당골).
    • Terminal to Cheoram/Jangseong: Frequent services connect the city center to the southern districts.
    • Terminal to Yongyeon Cave: Check the schedule at the terminal as these are less frequent.
  • 37.1718128.98822 Taebaek City Bus Information (태백 시내버스), 17, Hwangji-ro 15-gil. The Intercity Bus Terminal also serves as the main hub for city buses. While English signs are limited, the destination names are usually clearly marked on the front of the buses. Using a map app like KakaoMaps or Naver Maps is highly recommended for real-time bus arrivals and route tracking. OSM directions

By taxi

[edit]

Taxis are a convenient way to reach high-altitude sites like O2 Resort or Maebongsan Windy Hill, where buses are infrequent or don't reach the summit.

  • Availability: Taxi stands are located at Taebaek Station and the Bus Terminal.
  • Fares: Taxis use meters. The base fare is consistent with other provincial cities in Korea (around ₩4,000).

By car

[edit]

Renting a car is the most flexible way to explore valleys. However, with many winding mountain roads, it may not be an ideal choice for an inexperienced driver. On snowy days, it's recommended to have snow chains prepared.

  • Driving conditions: Roads are well-paved but feature many sharp curves and steep inclines. In winter, snow tires or chains are absolutely mandatory as the city frequently experiences heavy snowfall and icy conditions.
  • Parking: Most major tourist sites like the Coal Museum and Gumunso offer spacious free parking lots.

On foot and hiking

[edit]

While the city center (Hwangji-dong) is small enough to explore on foot, walking between different administrative districts is generally impractical due to the steep mountain passes. For any other travel between districts, motorized transport is necessary due to the mountainous terrain. There is a car rental directly across the train station and bus terminal. However, hiking is a legitimate way to get around within the Taebaeksan National Park area.

  • Connecting Sites: You can walk between the Taebaek Coal Museum, Dangunseongjeon Shrine, and the various temple sites within the Danggol Park area.
  • Trail Navigation: The trails are well-marked with distance markers. Hiking from the Yuilsa entrance to the Danggol entrance is a common way to see multiple "See" listings in one trip, though it requires a moderate level of physical fitness and proper gear.

By bicycle

[edit]

Bicycling in Taebaek is more of a challenging leisure activity than a practical way of commuting between districts, given that the city is located at an average altitude of 650m.

  • Manhangjae Pass: Famous among professional and amateur cyclists, this is the highest paved road in South Korea (1,330m). It connects Taebaek to neighboring Jeongseon and Yeongwol.
  • Challenges: Most roads connecting the districts (like the road to Maebongsan Windy Hill) involve significant elevation gains. Casual travelers should be aware that there are very few dedicated bike lanes on the main National Routes (Route 35 and 38), and sharing the road with large trucks can be hazardous.

By Taebaek tourism taxi

[edit]

To assist visitors who don't drive, Taebaek City operates a tourism taxi service that provides transportation between major attractions. It's a great option for tourists who are unable to drive themselves.
