Purpose

[edit]

See Wikivoyage:Travellers' pub#Calendar of events for the discussion that led to this article's creation. My understanding is that it is a test to demonstrate a way to better handle event calendars within Wikivoyage. -- Ryan • (talk) • 22:41, 4 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

I thought this had consensus and was just plunging forward Gnangarra (talk) 23:47, 4 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
I think there is agreement to start an experiment to see how this develops for the Toodyay article, although I'm still a bit confused as to what this approach offers that is different from something like Marina del Rey#Events. By all means, continue developing it and let's see how it goes. -- Ryan • (talk) • 23:57, 4 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
I keeps people coming back to update something Voyage needs, its gives a monthly overview something every traveller needs. Gnangarra (talk) 00:30, 5 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
I didn't see any opposition (and did see a lot of support at the Pub - at least in principle) for this useful idea for travellers. Are you saying that you are now opposed to this idea or to plunging forward in general, Wrh2? --118.93.67.66 01:44, 5 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

    Too many articles

    [edit]

I am nowhere near convinced this article is a good idea. As I see, the default should be to put it all in Toodyay#Do and consider a separate article only if there is enough material that it becomes hard to handle there. That might happen for a major city or a fairly large country — for example Shanghai or Australia with roughly the same population — or a very busy tourist center, but seems remarkably unlikely for Toodyay. This is similar to policies for parks and airports (separate article only if ...) and the way we decide when a big city needs to be split into districts.

I would support development of some sort of table, to be used in the ==Do== section or a level lower at ===Events===, that makes it easier to provide a nicely-displayed monthly summary. That would be useful in many articles and, I think, all that most of them would need.

To me, creating articles like May in Toodyay is downright offensive, obviously unnecessary. If it were actually needed (it isn't!), it could go at Toodyay/May. Consider the mess that would result if such things were done everywhere; 12 months and 1000 places gives 12,000 useless unmaintainable articles. Pashley (talk) 13:24, 6 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

I fully agree with you Pashley. For now, most of this conversation is at Wikivoyage:Travellers' pub#Calendar_of_events. Texugo (talk) 13:37, 6 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I had not seen that. Just to clarify, I agree that finding a better way to handle event listings (is there a template?) would be very useful, and an experiment aimed at finding one is reasonable. Creating half a dozen mainspace articles for a tiny village is what I object to. Pashley (talk) 13:48, 6 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
