- Dearest (WT-en) Jpatokal, sir. Taipei is a very large city. It needs to be broken up into districts in the same way as London, Tokyo or even smaller cities like Seattle are. If you list the cities in Taipei County under Taipei City, you will have a long dangling list (the list so far is far from complete). Maybe to get some prospective on the sitution, ask yourself would you include Saitama Prefecture or Kanagawa Prefecture and their municipalities under Tokyo? If, yes, then please put the towns back into Taipei. If not, then I suggest leaving them as separate listings. Anon. 3 Jan 06
- I'm trying to understand if Taipei County should be considered a part of Taipei or a region. If you think it is much too large to squeeze under Taipei, then it should be kept as a region, in which case cities in Taipei County should be individual destinations ("Danshui") and not districts ("Taipei County/Danshui"). (WT-en) Jpatokal 05:00, 3 Jan 2006 (EST)
- Actually, Taipei County is larger in both area and population than Taipei City (The former having around 3.5 million with the latter only around 2.5 million), so it probably not a good idea to try to squeeze the county info into the city article. For the sake of keeping the Taipei City article simple, I think it best to list the cities in Taipei County as individual destinations, as you suggest. Furthermore, as all Taiwan's cities are surrounded by a county of the same name, the problem will arise again later, so it is advisable to make the decision regarding this now. Please indicate if you want to list the cities as individual destinations, and I'll get to it. Anon. 3 Jan 06
No need for a reply. I checked how surrounding cities are listed in similar articles covering metropolitan areas and used these as models. All destinations in Taipei County are now listed as individual destinations. Hope that is ok with you. Anon. 3 Jan 06
- The Project:Article naming conventions say that each destination gets its own name. If you should define a destination as a separate community that has a surrounding countryside that separates it from other communities. A community that has local government representation, such as a town council and mayor, is a reasonable guideline. Though if an area has several small communities that are each represented by (a) politician(s) then they should probably be separate destinations too. Unfortunately, there is no exact rule and each case will be different.
- The City/District format should be used when a neighborhood does not have a distinctly separate community area, but it is an important part of a city or town, such as the city centre or CBD, government centre, university campus or a shopping or entertainment part of town - if the city has been planned that way. Generally this needs to be done only when the main destination page becomes so big it becomes hard to understand, with hundreds of listings for places to see, sleep, eat, drink, things to do etc.
- Unless the City and County cover exactly the same area, using the city name for the city article and City County for the surrounding county is a reasonable thing to do. -- (WT-en) Huttite 06:37, 3 Jan 2006 (EST)
Merge as Xinbei
[edit]Taipei County will be turned into one municipality (city) known as Xinbei (see [1]). Obviously this does not need to have implications for Wikivoyage, but maybe we should rename this section and use the Huge City template for the separate destinations. --(WT-en) globe-trotter 05:42, 27 July 2010 (EDT)
- The process is complete, and the authorities chose the name New Taipei. Still not sure how to deal with this, as its now officially one municipality. However, if we want to use the huge city template, its 29 official districts are too many. The 10 districts Banqiao, Luzhou, Sanchong, Shulin, Tucheng, Xizhi, Xindian, Xinzhuang, Yonghe, and Zhonghe are by far the largest ones, so I guess we'd have to combine other areas together and make them sensible districts. --(WT-en) globe-trotter 06:33, 14 October 2011 (EDT)
How should we deal with the districts of this and Taipei? They appear to be a rather large city and a ring of suburbs. What is the best approach that serves our readers? Hobbitschuster (talk) 08:24, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
- New Taipei City is a huge city with many districts, some of which have an interest to travellers, while other do not. Personally, I do not believe that it would be of benefit to the reader to list every district, but nor would it be helpful to clump all the information under the one heading of New Taipei City. I have currently categorized the districts geographically, but this is only a temporary measure until I think of a better designation that takes into account location, but also attractions. For a starter, I think we could designate some districts under the general heading of 'coastal districts, the present central districts could perhaps be designated as 'business districts' etc. Comments, thoughts?
- I have made a tentative attempt to categorize the areas of New Taipei City. In reality, districts like Yonghe and Zhonghe could be combined into one article, but as these places were former cities under the former Taipei County administration, they had been listed separately. I would also recommend that in the future Jinsan, Wanli, Shimen, and Sanzhi coastal districts be combined into one article under the title of 'Northern Coastal Districts'. Also as a way to avoid listing every small district, I have devised a sub-heading (Districts with notable attractions) to create links to the districts that have notable places of interest and already have designated articles. I don't know whether this works. If not, please feel free to revert my changes.
- I have taken it a step further and divided the areas of New Taipei under cultural and geographic headings. Ideally, the districts that currently have their own articles can be merged into articles under which they are listed. For example, Xindian and Wulai, should be combined with Sanxia under a heading of 'Southern Mountain area'. Ruifang and Gongliao can be combined into one article titled 'Southern' Coastal areas'. In this respect, the current set up is merely a step to establishing articles under the new headings and combining all the current district articles. —The preceding comment was added by 1.164.254.131 (talk • contribs)
- I don't have an opinion about any of this, except that it would be nice for there to be input from some other people, and thereby a consensus of more than one person, before more changes are made to the districting structure. But please sign your posts on talk pages by typing 4 tildes {~) in a row at the end of each post. It makes it a lot easier to follow who wrote what. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:29, 18 December 2017 (UTC)
- I am happy if someone wants change the headings, but as the page has not been touched for over a year, I felt that waiting for a consensus from people who are familiar with Taipei might take a very long time. My last request for comments went unheeded. Anyway, this is as far as I can take it. It now needs someone with more time to merge the districts (or change the lay out if they wish). Actually, the problem arose with this article, because originally New Taipei City was Taipei County and all the present districts were cities or towns in their own right and so individual articles were created. 1.164.254.131 09:37, 18 December 2017 (UTC)
- I understand. But just so you know, the way people normally try to get more eyes reading a districting thread is to post to Requests for comment and possibly the Travellers' pub and then wait for a few days to see if you get any input, then go ahead and do what seems best to you if you get no comments. - About District, I think we can refer Chinese article of New Taipei.
- 溪南地區 -> Tamsui River South, 三鶯地區 -> Sanying (Sanxia and Yingge), 三蘆地區 -> Sanlu (Sanchong and Luzhou), 溪北地區 -> Tamsui River North, 北觀地區 -> North Western Coast, 東北角地區 -> North Eastern Coast, 大翡翠地區 -> Big Feitsui (also name is Southern). the main district English name can refer to Wikipedia article.--Yuriy kosygin (talk) 17:24, 19 October 2018 (UTC)
- I've added in the groupings to the map as they were, but if there's a decision on how better to group them, we can change it later. Another alternative would be to group them into the 4 broad groupings used on the en Wikipedia article (Tamsui River South, Tamsui River North, North Western Coast, North Eastern Coast, Southern, and Mountain indigenous district). It depends if there is a preference to keep consistency with Wikipedia, or with the other language versions of the same Wikivoyage article. Kdm852 (talk) 13:58, 18 June 2019 (UTC)
- This article is still on a list of articles with active district discussions. Were the discussions resolved in 2019, or is there still something to decide? Ikan Kekek (talk) 12:03, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
