Thessalon is a town on the north shore of Lake Huron in the Near North region of Northern Ontario.

Understand

[edit]
Thessalon

The town is a popular retirement community. As of 2021, it had a population of 1,260 people.

The area's timber resources drew Europeans to the area as early as 1869, with the first lumber camp being set up in 1870. By 1877 a more permanent townsite was established. The town was incorporated in 1892.

The origin of the town's name is unclear. "Thessalon" may be a corruption of a name given by local First Nations (Indigenous people), Neyashewun, meaning "a point of land". It is also theorized that the town may have been named by Jesuit missionaries who compared their travels through the region to the plight of the Thessalonians described in the Pauline epistles.
