Vejen is a railway town of about 10,000 people (2022) between Esbjerg and Kolding in South Jutland. The town emerged in ancient times as an important waypoint for agricultural transport on the Jutlandic Ox Road trail, used for herding cattle and soldiers from Denmark to Germany. Vejen is still today an important traffic junction for the South Jutland region.
The main attractions in Vejen are the art museum and the large sports centre. Beautiful countryside.
Understand
[edit]Vejen has always been a waypoint for the region, and thus, easily accessible from all around. From Vejen, there is easy access to both large towns (Kolding, Ribe, Esbjerg and Haderslev) and interesting villages (Gram, Christiansfeld, Jels and Egtved). Legoland in Billund is not far away either.

[edit]You can easily walk around town. The city bus 16 drives through most of the city and arrives every 30 min.

The main focus is on the sculptor Niels Hansen Jacobsen who not only was the reason the museum was built, but who also lived at the museum after 1924. free.
- 2 Troldeparken, Rosengade 38A. A troll-themed park in Vejen with a large playground and an enclosure with goats. Behind the playground is a forest with a large enclosure with deer. The park hosts a collection of large and interesting rocks, called "The singing rocks". free.

- 4 Sønderskov Castle, Sønderskovgårdvej 2, Brørup (In the countryside a few kilometres west of Vejen), ☏ +45 75383866, [email protected]. Tu-Su 11:00-16:00. Sønderskov Manor was first mentioned in 1448 and the present manor house is a Renaissance building built by the nobleman Thomas Juel in 1614-1620. Experience how counts and barons lived during the Renaissance in Denmark. The museum exhibitions changes on a monthly basis. The associated garden park have been restored to its original baroque grandeur, and includes a kitchen and herb garden tended by local volunteers. Among the flowers, trees and vegetables, a school is kept for bee keeping, and the produce can be bought in the museum's shop. The medieval cellars house a restaurant. free.

- 6 The Troll Fountain (in front of the art museum). impressive fountain with a troll and several gargoyles, which has become the trademark of the city.

Do
[edit]- 1 Kongeåstien. Do a nature hike along the Kongeå river, a river flowing west from the small town of Vamdrup, past Vejen, and all the way across Jutland to the Wadden Sea coast in the Wadden Sea National Park between Ribe and Esbjerg. Marked route, known as Kongeåstien. Shelters along the route.
Parts of the Kongeå river used to mark the old Danish-German border 1864-1920. - 2 Canoing, Haderslevvej 7, Skodborg (at the Kongeå river between Vejen and Skodborg), ☏ +45 29 64 73 56. Rent a canoe at Vejen Canoecenter and paddle your way down one of the local streams (Kongeåen, Gels å, Ribe å, or Gram å) for shorter or extended journeys. Campsites available on the routes.
