Wikivoyage:Wikidata Expedition Voyage Tips and guide

You can check the original Wikivoyage article Here

The Wikidata Expedition is a Wikivoyage Expedition to foster data sharing between the English Wikivoyage and the other Wikimedia projects, via Wikidata.

    How to help

    [edit]

Associate Wikivoyage articles to Wikidata entries

    [edit]

A link from a Wikipedia article to the same-topic article in other projects (such as Wikivoyage) is normally provided by Wikidata. Click "Wikidata item" from the sidebar "Tools" menu on a Wikipedia page to open the corresponding data record (for instance, Montreal is on Q340). Scroll down to the "Wikivoyage" section to add the language code (English is "en") and article name (Montreal) for Wikivoyage's article. (Oui, celà va sans dire that Wikivoyage en français has an article on Montréal, so that will be listed too - with "fr" as the language code for the French language.)

    Fix the Wikidata data

    [edit]

Wikidata contains some errors, let's do our part and help fix them.

Fortunately, Wikidata detects probable errors and list them in "violations" pages:

Also page names change and not always updated automatically

    • Category:Redirects connected to a Wikidata item, (on 2018.04.29 was 360), (on 2018.05.01 was 377), (on 2018.05.01 was 591). Currently - 2593
      • Can Wikidata point to another Wikivoyage article, if not delete Wikidata entry referencing Wikivoyage.

Coordinates for Wikivoyage article page but none in Wikidata

Policy for articles for which no direct equivalent exists in Wikidata

    [edit]

Some articles don't have an equivalent on Wikidata.

Case 0: Wikivoyage page does not have a Wikidata object

    [edit]

Wikivoyage articles without Wikidata entry (on 2018.04.28 was 158)

    • either
      • Find Wikipedia page that matches and the add Wikivoyage article to its Wikidata page
      • Search on Wikidata too, there may not be an English Wikipedia page but could existing in other languages (particularly language of destination) or other WikiProjects
    • or
      • create new Wikidata item.

Case 1a: Wikipedia does not have an article for this, but should

    [edit]

Category:Articles without Wikipedia links (via Wikidata), (on 2018.01.26 was 2450). Currently - 2730

Case 1b: Wikipedia does not have an article for this, but are similar related topics

    [edit]
    • Use {{RelatedWikipedia}} (with rel=y option) on Wikivoyage page to create link(s) to the Wikipedia pages.

Case 2: Wikivoyage is more granular than Wikipedia

    [edit]

It is not possible on Wikidata to link to the same article multiple times

    • Consider Extraregion or Disambiguation page on Wikivoyage if a region level article on Wikivoyage does not make sense. Link this to the Wikidata object of the Wikipedia page.
    • Create a Wikidata entries for the Wikivoyage pages
    • Use {{RelatedWikipedia}} on Wikivoyage pages to create link to the Wikipedia page.
    • Add Wikivoyage template on the Wikipedia page multiple times or if created Extraregion page add Wikipedia page to Wikidata object.

Case 3: Wikipedia is more granular than Wikivoyage

    [edit]

    Case 4: Meta-information

    [edit]

These articles can probably not benefit from Wikidata, they should be left as-is:

    e.g.Discover, Star articles, Travel news/2004

    Case 5: GPX tracks

    [edit]

They will be moved to a separate namespace or Commons as soon as possible:

    e.g. Soltau/Gpx

    Expedition members
