Yaguarón is a Paraguayan city in Southern Paraneña. The city is recognized for its tourist and cultural value.

Understand

[edit]

Its name comes from an ancient legend, which says that a large dog, Jaguaru or Ñaguaru in Guaraní, would be the ancestral protector of the city.

Its foundation dates back to 1587, the work of Friar Luis Bolaños and his companion Alonso de San Buenaventura, after the arrival of the Franciscans in Paraguay . Their greatest legacy is the San Buenaventura Church , one of the most beautiful and beloved places for tourists not only in Paraguay but from all over the world. Its architecture is remarkable. The Yaguarón church is a monumental colonial-style structure where one can see true works of art in wood carvings by indigenous people from the workshops of the Franciscan reductions.

The temple of San Buenaventura, patron saint of the city of Yaguarón, is one of the most famous in Colonial America, worthy of being admired and contemplated. It is located in the middle of a large square, surrounded by leafy trees.

Its gabled roof is supported by wooden columns, and its thick adobe walls are surrounded by the "Jere" corridor, approximately 6 m wide. The interior is a stark contrast to the simplicity of the exterior. Its altarpieces, confessionals, pulpit, and sacristy are remarkably beautiful and magnificent. Upon entering the church, one can immediately perceive its monumental scale.

First, you see the choir, attached to the main facade. Then the crucified Christ, carved in wood.

The ceiling and columns are lavishly decorated with shapes inspired by local flora.

The main altar, of considerable size (14 meters high by 6 meters long), features a large central niche where the beautiful image of the Immaculate Conception stands out. Above her head hangs a dove, symbolizing the Holy Spirit. It reflects the artistic style of the Hispanic-Guarani Baroque period. This monumental work was directed by the Portuguese artist José de Souza Cavadas.
