Záhorie is a region in Western Slovakia. The word "Záhorie" means "(The land) behind the mountains", referring to the Little Carpathians mountains that separate Záhorie from the rest of Slovakia.

[edit]The proximity of the borders with Austria and the Czech Republic means that the terrain here is similar to the hilly regions of Moravia, and the villages resemble Austrian wine towns.

- 1 Habánsky dvor. An showcase of a typical "haban house" in the Veľké Leváre town. Guided visit can be arranged.
- 2 Church of Virgin Marry of Seven Grievances. One of the most important Slovak basilica minors.
- 3 Jewish synagogue in Malacky.
- 4 Manor house in Holíč. A former water-castle, rebuilt to a manor house.
- 5 Manor house in Malacky. It was built as a baroque home of the noble family of Palffy, and has been re-purposed multiple times since. A relatively big park is accessible behind the main building.

- 8 Pajštún. This 13th-century castle is a popular destination for Bratislava's inhabitants, because of the proximity. The castle was ruined in early 19th century.

[edit]This region is well known for producing high quality wines, especially in the regions around the town Skalica. This town is well known for a typical cuveé - Skalicky Rubin (Skalica Carbuncle), a composition of three sorts of red wine - Noir de Franconie (subsort Lampart)+ Portugais Bleu + Saint Laurent (Skalicka Frankovka, Modry Portugal, Svätovavrinecké) and also a typical subsort of Noir de Franconie redwine - Lampart.
The region specific production of alcoholic beverages is typically known with wine brandy and various fruit spirits (pear, apple, plum...) with higher volume of alcohol, 40% and more, especially slivovica, a popular local speciality.
