Zalaegerszeg is the administrative centre of Zala County. The city was founded in 12th century, and has about 57,000 inhabitants (2019).

The area was already inhabited in the Upper Paleolithic, according to archaeological findings (the oldest ones in Zala county). Later, the area was inhabited by Celts. The first written mentions of the town are as Egerscug (1247) and Egerszeg (1293); the name means "alder-tree corner" and is probably a reference to the town's situation in the angle where two rivers meet.

Trains are available in every two hours from Budapest-Déli pályaudvar via Székesfehérvár, Veszprém and Zalaszentiván (junction point to Szombathely and Nagykanizsa). The journey takes about 3 hours and costs 3950 Ft. Other direct connections are:

• Toward west: Őriszentpéter via Zalalövő seven times a day. There are direct international trains via Bajánsenye to Hodoš (Slovenia) four times a day, and to Ljubljana once a day.
• Toward south: Rédics via Lenti four times a day.

Volánbusz operates local buses in Zalaegerszeg. Tickets (in 2019): 250 Ft in advance, 340 Ft from driver. Passes (in 2019): 6400 Ft per month, 3200 Ft semimonthly.
