The National Flag of Nepal

The national flag of Nepal stands out as the world’s sole national flag not confined to a quadrilateral shape. It is a fusion of two single pennons, with crimson red representing the rhododendron, Nepal’s national flower, and a symbol of victory in conflict. The blue border signifies peace.

Initially, the flag featured emblems—the sun and crescent moon—with human faces until 1962, when they were modernized. These faces persisted on the Royal Standard until the monarchy’s abolition in 2008.

The blue border embodies the peace and harmony associated with Nepal since the time of Gautama Buddha’s birth in the country. Crimson red, Nepal’s national colour, reflects the courage of its people. The two triangles symbolize the Himalayas and the coexistence of Hinduism and Buddhism.

Moreover, the celestial bodies represent permanence, mirroring the aspiration for Nepal’s enduring existence akin to the sun and moon. The moon symbolizes Nepalese tranquillity, while the sun denotes determination and strength, also representing the diverse climates of Nepal.

Additionally, the flag’s shape evokes a Nepalese pagoda, and placing a mirror beside the flagpole generates an image resembling a pagoda.
