Langreo is a town in Asturias in northern Spain, 20 km southeast of Oviedo, with a population of 38,000 in 2024. It's post-industrial, part of the Asturias rust belt, and that heritage is the main reason to visit.
Understand
[edit]This area has both coal and iron deposits, so it's long been a centre for steel-making, but its heyday was the 19th century. The coal was exhausted first but industry continued by trading Spanish iron ore for Welsh coal. A series of villages each with their own mine and foundry grew into each other, the largest being La Felguera and Sama. This created a valley corridor of grime, ribbon development and industrial strife, which became uneconomic in the 20th century and degenerated into a brownfield. It has attracted some new businesses - Bayer makes aspirin here - but it's mostly a commuter town for Oviedo.
Get in
[edit]For long-distance routes see Oviedo. The nearest airport is Asturias (OVD IATA), take the hourly bus to Oviedo and change.
By road from the south follow A-66 to Mieres then join AS-1 towards Gijón.
Langreo sprawls along a valley and has half-a-dozen railway stations at the convergence of two Cercanías commuter lines. Train C2 runs hourly from Oviedo, taking 30 min, and continues to El Entrego. Train C5 runs hourly from Gijón Sanz Crespo via El Berrón, continuing via El Entrego to Laviana. Change at El Berrón for Pola de Siero and Infiesto, change at Oviedo for most other places on the network.
1 La Felguera is the main station, on the Oviedo line. It's a simple halt, buy tickets from the machines.
La Felguera-Nuevo Langreo station is 200 m east, on the Gijón line.
Local buses run hourly from Oviedo to the bus stand 200 m south of La Felguera railway station.
Get around
[edit]Use the train to get along the valley, for instance to El Entrego for MUMI. You need your own wheels for sights up in the hills.
Taxi firms are Taxi Ciudad de Langreo (+34 985 699999) and Radio Taxi La Felguera (+34 985 680000).

Do
[edit]- Teatro José León Delestal is on Inmobiliaria Setsa, 200 m north of La Felguera station.
- Cine Felgueroso sometimes shows films but is nowadays a general-purpose cultural centre. It's at Dorado 25 in Sama.
- El Camino de San Salvador is a modern invention: it follows an ancient trade route from León to Oviedo, but was never a pilgrimage trail to Santiago. Still it makes for a good five-day hike crossing the Picos de Europa, for about the same physical and spiritual benefit as the longer-established routes. It passes through Campumanes, Pola de Lena and Mieres, bypassing Langreo as it swings west into Oviedo.

[edit]
The usual supermarket chains are strung along the valley: Alimerka, Dia, Mercadona and more. They're typically open M-Sa 09:00-21:30.
