Talk:Malawi/CIA World Factbook 2002 import
Regions
[edit]Err. Lake Malawi is the main destination for most travellers to Malawi, and thus makes a pretty good region despite the usual bodies of water rule. (WT-en) Jpatokal 01:24, 9 June 2007 (EDT)
- I was more concerned about its length (e.g. Monkey Bay being so far from Karonga). But how about:
- Upper Malawi (the parts of the Northern and Central regions uphill from the lake)
- Lake Nyasa/Malawi (and which should we call it?)
- Southern Malawi —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) TVerBeek (talk • contribs)
I don't think the lake makes such a good region, since it takes up so much of the country and because of the country's shape... and because the lake destination are so spread out and are the main places people go... it's the same situation as Goa, where "beaches" or "the coast" make a lame region... all of the destinations of note would all be on the same page pretty much Which is fine if they're near each other, but in Malawi's case they're very spread out. Personally I think North, South and Central are a good division... there will be lake and non-lake destinations in each, and most people visiting Malawi will be traveling north to south or the reverse... if you go to the north, you'll see any non-lake and lake destinations at the same time, making sense to have them in the same region... you wouldn't visit all the "lake destinations" first, and then backtrack all over the place to visit other regions. – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 01:32, 10 June 2007 (EDT)
- Here's a map that already has it split into North/Central/South... the divisions here aren't terrible... – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 01:37, 10 June 2007 (EDT)
- Those are administrative divisions, which aren't binding on us. But yeah, I didn't just make them up. :) - (WT-en) Todd VerBeek 09:55, 10 June 2007 (EDT)
- I'm not sure if we should leave the three regions as is, or try to create a region for the lake. It looks like a region could be made that focuses on the southern end of Lake Malawi, including places like Salima, Mangochi, Monkey Bay, Cape Maclear and the Malawian part of the eastern shore of the lake. This would effectively split Southern Malawi in two, leaving Zomba, Blantyre and some parks in Southern Malawi. Any thoughts on if this makes sense or not? And if we do create a lake region, what it should be named? (Here's a political map for reference) (WT-en) Shaund 00:32, 28 January 2010 (EST)
- I think we should leave it as north, central and south, and if at some point the south article becomes large and unruly we can divide it then.... Malawi is pretty tiny.... and the south article is currently empty anyhow – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 02:53, 28 January 2010 (EST)
- OK, map and breadcrumbs updated for three region structure. (WT-en) Shaund 00:24, 4 February 2010 (EST)
- Great work not only with the map, but also the fiddly associated work. Well done Shaun.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 00:32, 4 February 2010 (EST)
Superregion
[edit]Would anyone have an objection to moving Malawi to Southern Africa instead of East Africa? (WT-en) LtPowers 10:02, 9 July 2011 (EDT)
- This was discussed at Talk:Africa#Regions. Certainly no objection from me. It looks very odd bundled in with East Africa.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 10:17, 9 July 2011 (EDT)
