Changing the banner for a better one

[edit]

I'm currently in Tskhinvali and improving it's WikiVoyage page in English and Russian, as well as OpenStreetMap map here. I've noticed that current[1] banner dating 2013 is, in my opinion, quite poor in terms of relation to and representation of the city.

I don't see how this wall with a cross of the church represents Tskhinvali on a banner, even if the church is here. It's not a proper comparison, but it's like if the New York page had, instead of the current landscape of the city - a banner with the glass wall of one of the skyscrappers there or Moscow's one didn't have a Red Square now but a wall of the Kremlin, so to say.

I've made a photo specially for that today when walking depicting the central square of the city in night, here it is - [2]. I think at least in comparison with current "wall" there it's much better and more representative of the city.

I've changed it, but Ikan Kekek reverted it and said that I need to create a discussion page for that, I'm not fully familiar with how all kinds of editing are done here, so fixing my mistake - created this page C:

So, what do you guys think? Ponkipo (talk) 18:30, 11 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

I tend to support the change, although the existing banner seems unique. Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:00, 11 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
I'm conflicted: the current banner feels very symbolic but the proposed banner feels like it captures the city better. This is probably a rare instance where I truly cannot decide which banner I favour. //shb (t | c | m) 23:45, 11 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
thx for response! the way I see this is if this was Mount Athos or Meteora in Greece, showing the wall of the church with the cross would have a meaning and would be symbolic as those are monasteries and religious places, here it's a city page, not related to religion and there are just a few churches here, so doesn't seem too suitable, at least in my eyes.. :)
btw I also made another banner, showing the streets (such views are really typical here), maybe you'll also like it, didn't upload to Wiki for now - https://imgur.com/a/1XQw9gY Ponkipo (talk) 06:54, 12 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
I find that view very prosaic and gray, even though the flowers help a bit, and would oppose using it. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:08, 12 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
In this commons category there are several images with a nice composition that can be cropped to make a banner. However, those images are of a far to low resolution to do so. I personally like to respect the contributor who selected the present banner by selecting a new one that also containes the subject of the present banner. @Ponkipo: if you have such an image, but did not upload it, maybe you could do so (or if you are still around, make such an image). --FredTC (talk) 05:09, 13 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Interesting idea! Will take a walk there and make a photo of the church, will send the poster later :) Ponkipo (talk) 12:58, 13 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
hi again, so it's ready, what do you think of that option?

Thanks! It's too bad the top of the building on the left is cut of; do you have it in your original photo? Also, could you do a perspective correction? -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:18, 13 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
thx! yes, updated it with those corrections (if I understood the perspective point properly hehe) Ponkipo (talk) 17:35, 13 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
I will upload a new version that has no perspective problem. FredTC (talk) 01:18, 14 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
I could not replace the banner (not allowed, because I'm not the original uploader). So I uploaded a new one: File:St Mary Church Tskhnivali Banner (1).jpg. FredTC (talk) 01:31, 14 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I like the banner and would support using it. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:11, 14 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
I also support the new banner. --FredTC (talk) 01:38, 15 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
cool, thanks! sooo I can update it then? :) Ponkipo (talk) 07:32, 16 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
ah, that what is meant by perspective, now got it. yeah is's better for sure, thanks! Ponkipo (talk) 14:44, 14 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
now it seems that I can't replace the original banner file too as it shows it's a duplicate of a new fixed "(1)" file haha
I guess we can just use the version made by @FredTC, although it will be kinda duplicating a picture in a database, in a way, dunno Ponkipo (talk) 14:52, 14 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
well, it seems I could still upload a correct version by @FredTC, just had to ignore the duplication warning... Ponkipo (talk) 14:57, 14 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
