To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub. If you are familiar with Wikipedia, take a look over some of the differences here. - Yes, welcome, and thanks for your edits to Kendal (England). I hope you will add more information to the names of attractions, such as street addresses, opening hours, descriptions, etc. Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:09, 2 October 2014 (UTC)

Cavern Walks
[edit]Hi Darrelljon. The listing you added to Liverpool has a couple of issues that don't work with our Manual of Style, in particular WV:Don't tout. I'm not suggesting for a second that you are touting, because you've been a valued member of our team for a couple of years now, but the text of the listing looks as though it has been copied and pasted from elsewhere (with the use of first-person "we"), which may be problematic for copyright reasons. Furthermore, you haven't written anything that tells the reader what Cavern Walks is, and what they should expect from going there, which doesn't make it very useful for the traveller. If you could look over WV:Listings, and find a better way to write the listing which is more in keeping with our style, that would be great. Best wishes, --ThunderingTyphoons! Uncredited copying from Wikitravel
[edit]Hi Darrelljon. Thanks for starting an article about Costa Adeje, but because you extensively used passages copied and pasted either from Wikitravel or another site that is also plagiarized on Wikitravel, and you gave no credit to your source in your edit summaries, the way I see it, respect for Wikitravel's Creative Commons Copyleft and Wikivoyage's own copyleft policy leaves no choice but to delete the article.
Please start again from scratch, and when you do, make sure not only not to copy text from Wikitravel, which even if cited in edit summaries is an undesirable thing to do, but also please keep in mind the don't tout guidelines affecting phrases like "We recommend" and more general questions of tone, and also WV:Listings, which doesn't really envision mere lists of names without description or location information nor unspecific phrasing like "A resort that attracts thousands of visitors every year. With an extensive range of shops, shopping malls, restaurants ... Just take a walk through the streets and experience the charm of the local shops.", which doesn't give any specifically usable information and could be encapsulated to "There are many malls in Costa Adeje [restaurants get included in "Eat", not "Buy"], but the real charm is to be found at the shops that line the streets."
I hope all this makes sense.
Best,
Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:13, 20 March 2017 (UTC)
Links to Wikipedia
[edit]Hi there. Thanks for your contributions to articles relating to North West England.
In case you don't know, we don't put links to Wikipedia in the text of articles. The only two types of link to Wikipedia we allow are (1) Sidebar links to an article's WP counterpart, (2) Links from a listing to that attraction's WP article.
(Basically, that's why I removed your link to the Birkenhead ferry port from the Dublin article.)
I hope that makes sense; let me know if not. All the best --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 17:06, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
Feedback about your edits
[edit]Hello, Darrelljon. Thanks as ever for adding useful content to Wikivoyage, especially to articles like Liverpool which have been neglected for a while. Be assured that I view your contributions as overwhelmingly positive, and am glad to have you here. However, you have been with us a while now, and there are some improvements that you could easily make in order to make things easier for everyone.
I would like to ask you to start using a Watchlist, which will enable you to track changes to articles you've edited. The reason I think this will help you is it will let you see the edits which follow yours. If you look at the edit history of e.g. Liverpool, you might see a theme: most of your edits to the page are followed by edits from other users, myself included, modifying the content you added to make sure they fit within our style. Ordinarily, it is not a problem if you, I, or anyone else make a mistake on Wikivoyage - there is always someone else to correct the mistake. But when I see you making the same mistake (e.g. putting "Liverpool" in the address field for a listing which is obviously in Liverpool) over and over and over again, it becomes clear that you're not seeing the follow-up edits and edit summaries directed at you (see here and here for just two examples).
As you can understand, it is not the best use of other Wikivoyagers' time to have to read and edit each of your edits for the same small number of mistakes again and again. So, when you have some time, please do have a look through the edit history of Liverpool. Take notice of the follow-up comments to your edits, and keep them in mind when you next edit Wikivoyage. If there are just three things you can get consistently right, this will be a massive help to us and will immediately make you a better contributor:
- Leave the city or town and county name out of an address where that name is the same as the name of the article. So "The Cavern Club, 10 Mathew Street, L2 6RE", and not "The Cavern Club, 10 Mathew Street, Liverpool, Merseyside, L2 6RE"
- Include the country code in every telephone number. So "+44 151 236 1965", and not "0151 236 1965"
- When you add a listing, make sure it is not just a name with no accompanying information. So instead of this, try for something more like this.
As for making a Watchlist, it's very easy. At the top of every page of the travel guide, there is a white star symbol. Click the star once, and it will go blue; this means that the page has been added to your Watchlist. Then, in order to see your Watchlist, click on the 'Watchlist' button next to the 'Log out' button right at the top right of your screen (when in desktop mode).
I hope you see the positive in this long message. It is all to help you get better, not to have a go at you. Please let me know if there's anything I or anyone else can do to help make editing Wikivoyage easier for you. I and the other site admins are here to support the whole community in our goal of creating the best open-source travel guide. It would also be nice to get some sort of signal that you've read and understood this message.
All best wishes, ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 14:59, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
- Nice job on your latest edits to Liverpool, and thanks for taking on board the suggestions made above! ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 12:20, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
I saw you've resurrected the redirected article of Costa Adeje with new content. It's great you have knowledge of the south of Tenerife, that desert area is still pretty much a blind spot on the WV map for the island. I've been considering starting an article for Adeje first, since it's a bit odd to have an article for the coastal town side but not for the municipality itself. Would you be able to contribute to an article on Adeje? 77.228.240.39 22:40, 22 August 2019 (UTC)
Not sure this area of Liverpool needs to be in a separate article. Liverpool article is not that large yet, but if you think it should be split into districts it would be a good idea to explain how you would split the article up into districts at Talk:Liverpool --Traveler100 (talk) 21:41, 7 September 2019 (UTC)
- Let's make it one article now. We can have the districts discussion later. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 21:52, 7 September 2019 (UTC)
- I disapprove. That's a messy non-solution. Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:23, 7 September 2019 (UTC)
- What's your proposed alternative? --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 22:26, 7 September 2019 (UTC)
- The normal one! No district articles until and unless there's a consensus to district the whole city. If Darrelljon nevertheless wants to continue working on this article, it should be moved to his userspace. Otherwise, it should be merged and redirected. You'd prefer messy, incompletely irregular districting? Cite the guidelines in support of that, please! Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:31, 7 September 2019 (UTC)

This was a district in error. Always intended this as a itinery for a ferry service like the ones on Baltic sea ferries or Harper's Ferry. I have now changed it accordingly. It is not a district of anything as it runs to both Wirral and Manchester.--Darrelljon (talk) 22:37, 7 September 2019 (UTC)
- Cool. How many stops does the ferry make? Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:56, 7 September 2019 (UTC)
- Depends on the journey type.--Darrelljon (talk) 19:03, 9 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Ikan Kekek: "Let's make it one article now" may have been ambiguous to you, but I mean that it should be merged into Liverpool. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 00:25, 8 September 2019 (UTC)
- Yeah, I misunderstood your meaning. About an itinerary: unless it has multiple stops with a fair amount to say about each one, it should presumably be just a listing. Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:06, 8 September 2019 (UTC)
- Right now, it's entirely unclear what routes this itinerary takes, and the article's division into sections is irregular for this kind of article. Please look at previously featured itineraries, such as Route 66. Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:50, 10 September 2019 (UTC)

Adding images
[edit]I have noticed you have put quite some images in articles. Good images are nice to have, but I have two remarks, as you might have understood from my follow-up edits. The illustrations should be as relevant as possible for the article where they are placed. You cannot hitchhike with the Royal Clipper, so why not use an image of a yacht instead, for which the caption about using sail power is even more relevant – I suppose Commons has loads of images of yachts that cross the Atlantic. And it is kind of dull if the same images appear in many articles. Try to put the nice image you find just in one article that needs the image and where it is relevant. --LPfi (talk) 14:40, 5 February 2020 (UTC)
- Regarding this image, you might be able to answer my questions at Talk:Car camping#Static trailers. I am confused on the matter. –LPfi (talk) 13:47, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
