Welcome, and a few pointers
[edit]
To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page.
If you are a Wikipedian, then you may notice some differences in policies and the style of our articles. These include:
- NPOV → be fair (not quite the same thing!)
- be bold → plunge forward
- Village pump → travellers' pub
- External links → We do not use a separate external links section, but incorporate primary links only into the text itself.
- sandbox → graffiti wall
- stub tagging → article status
It may also be very useful for you to check out Wikivoyage:Welcome, Wikipedians. If you need help, take a look at Wikivoyage:Help, or else post a message in the Wikivoyage:Travellers' pub, as a reply below or on my talk page. Thanks for contributing!
Thanks very much for adding information about places in Panama! We all know from our previous experience when we were new users that there is a learning curve to Wikivoyage. So in that spirit, in addition to the points above, please don't change standard subheadings like "Get in" in Wikivoyage:Article templates or add external links or citations sections (those violate Wikivoyage:External links and aren't in keeping with the site's style). The best way to cite sources is in edit summaries, or you can post something on the article's talk page.
Please carry on! I'm glad to have you here.
All the best,
Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:27, 18 April 2025 (UTC)
- Please stop re-adding a "Reference" section. Such a section violates Wikivoyage:External links, and edit warring also is not tolerated on this site. Thanks. Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:07, 19 April 2025 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, I have to put a temporary block on your account for continuing to create irregular sections not in any article template and specifically ignoring site policy prohibiting "External links" sections that you've been repeatedly informed about. Please post here after you've read all the remarks on this page and know that you are serious about working collaboratively on this site. Ikan Kekek (talk) 14:44, 13 May 2025 (UTC)
- Hello! No, please. I thought external links were placed like this. Please give me another chance. HJGN2 (talk) 14:48, 13 May 2025 (UTC)
- So that we know you understand: Where should you put external links to secondary sources? Also, have you read the rest of this page and had a look at Wikivoyage:Article skeleton templates? Don't use irregular section headers that aren't in any article template. Ikan Kekek (talk) 14:54, 13 May 2025 (UTC)
- Hi, I'd like to clarify that I didn't mean to abandon the discussion or ignore your message. In fact, I read it at the time, but it seemed to me more of an observation or warning that didn't require a direct response. If you interpreted my silence as indifference, I sincerely apologize; that wasn't the case. I appreciate the time you took to review the article and your willingness to guide the work within the project. HJGN2 (talk) 02:53, 15 May 2025 (UTC)
- Sorry it was unclear that I was waiting for your reply to that message before unblocking the account. You still didn't really answer, though. Where would you put an external link to a secondary source? I'll unblock your account, but I do want to see your reply. Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:01, 15 May 2025 (UTC)
- All right. In response to your question about where external links to secondary sources should be placed:
- As I understand it, these links should be included within the corresponding sections of the article (such as "See," "Do," "Sleep," etc.) only when they provide genuinely useful information for travelers and are not promotional in nature. If I'm not mistaken, in some cases they can also be added at the end of the article, in the "External Links" section, if they don't fit into any specific section. In any case, I'll be sure to review their use carefully and follow the style guide. I appreciate any additional guidance you can give me. HJGN2 (talk) 03:21, 15 May 2025 (UTC)
- No, it was kind of a trick question. Please reread Wikivoyage:External links. Secondary sources are not cited in the body of articles. If you paraphrased or used information from a secondary source in an edit, please link it in an edit summary. If you don't, you can mention it on the article's talk page. If you haven't read Wikivoyage:External links, read it and the other links I gave you before you make any more edits on this site. Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:29, 15 May 2025 (UTC)
- Well, now that I've reread the policy more carefully, I understand that links to secondary sources should be completely avoided to keep the article clear, organized, and focused on official and reliable information for travelers.
- I appreciate your patience and guidance. I'll make sure I follow the policies correctly before continuing with further edits. HJGN2 (talk) 04:22, 15 May 2025 (UTC)
- You don't have to be perfect, but you do need to read the links I've given you, and please ask any questions you have after reading them. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:39, 15 May 2025 (UTC)

District articles
[edit]Panama City is not divided into districts for the purposes of this guide. New district articles should not be created unless there is a detailed, comprehensive districting scheme that is proposed on the Talk:Panama City page and approved by a consensus, and all existing district articles about the city need to be merged and redirected to the city article. Thanks! Ikan Kekek (talk) 14:40, 13 May 2025 (UTC)
