Welcome to the Arrivals Lounge

The Arrivals Lounge is a place where learners on Wikivoyage can ask questions about the website; in particular, questions about formatting, templates, or any problems or concerns. Experienced users can answer their questions and help them learn more about how to use the website.

For travel advice, please ask at the tourist office instead.

To start a new topic, click the button below entitled "Click here to ask a new question", so that the new topic gets added at the bottom of the page, and sign your post by appending four tildes (~~~~). To see the archives, please visit the archive for the month you are looking for. For example, Wikivoyage:Arrivals lounge/Archives/2018/September gets you the archives for September 2018. Archiving is done automatically after one month per discussion. There is also a page with links to archives; see Wikivoyage:Arrivals lounge/Archives.

Sources required?

[edit]

I am new to Wikivoyage and used to Wikipedia. Do you need to site sources or are first hand accounts fine?

Oak lod (talk) 19:09, 11 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

No to the first and yes to the second. Please have a look at Wikivoyage:Welcome, Wikipedians, which is likely to answer more questions you might have, and welcome! Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:13, 11 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Oak lod, you might also find it helpful to look at some of the Star articles.
It depends a little on what you mean by a first-hand account. We do want recommendations based on experience (see this, do that, eat here, parking is difficult, so take the bus...). We don't want personal blogs ("On Monday, I went to Bigcity. Here's a picture of me at the museum!"). WhatamIdoing (talk) 22:19, 11 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
The first example is what I meant by first hand accounts. Thank you for confirming. Oak lod (talk) 22:42, 11 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Oak lod, it looks like you've done a good job at Pinecrest. I fixed a few typos. The banner image is a good one but needs to be cropped. (My main method for doing this over the years has been to leave a note at Wikivoyage:Banner suggestions.) WhatamIdoing (talk) 23:01, 11 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I will get to cropping the image. Oak lod (talk) 01:30, 12 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Just finished cropping it. Oak lod (talk) 02:46, 12 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Oak lod, I just checked in. The page is looking pretty nice.
I added a pair of listings with the latitude and longitude, and a "marker" for Strawberry Dam. I put in a dynamic map that will link all the places that have lat/long numbers. If you add the locations, it'll auto-adjust to show them all. (It can also be adjusted by hand, e.g., if there's nothing to add on the east side of the lake, or if we decide not to show the hotel in the next town.) WhatamIdoing (talk) 01:48, 18 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Problems with the "Listings" template.

[edit]

I am working on the page for Pinecrest CA right now, and one of the main goals for me right now is to get longitude and latitude on all the listings. I recently added a listing for the Pinecrest Hub, but the Longitude and Latitude does not show up. It gives a message telling me to add both longitude an latitude or neither, however both are already in the listing. Here is the page: Pinecrest. If anyone has any suggestions to help with this I would be very grateful. Oak lod (talk) 17:23, 22 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

There was a lot of extra coding in the listing that I took out, but the real problem seems to have been the coordinates. You had put lat=119 long=38. The coordinates for Pinecrest are lat=38 long=-119. The negative sign indicates that it is west of Greenwich (UK). Taking that out put it 119 degrees east of Greenwich, which is in China. Thanks. Oak lod (talk) 17:40, 22 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Dumb question

[edit]

At one point in time, I remember stumbling across a user page with a dynamic edit counter built-in. I thought it was pretty cool and was wondering if anybody knew how to do this. If anyone knows, can you please tell me? This may not be the right place for this question.

Oak lod (talk) 02:50, 23 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

You can always see an accurate count for yourself at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-personal-info.
If you want to see edit counts for everyone, then I use UserInfo.js (see simulated appearance of user pages). Look at line 18 in m:User:WhatamIdoing/global.js. You can copy it to m:Oak lod/global.js if you'd like to enable it at all the wikis simultaneously.
There are also some counters that work a bit like a userbox, but they're unreliable. You have to edit or purge the page to get the current number. WhatamIdoing (talk) 03:49, 23 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for replying! I tried creating my global.js page and adding the stuff you told me to, however, it wasn't actual js code when I finished, just a normal page. Is there something I did wrong? If so, do tell. Oak lod (talk) 14:58, 23 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Never mind I figured it out. Oak lod (talk) 15:21, 23 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
I'm glad you figured it out. There are hundreds of user scripts around, and some of them are IMO really helpful. WhatamIdoing (talk) 16:43, 23 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

How do I add natural disaster information?

[edit]

Guangfu is currently experiencing an outflow disaster from a landslide-dammed lake caused by Typhoon Ragasa. It is not in a state suitable for tourism at the moment. Which section should I add this information? Sunfish dash (talk) 07:01, 30 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

I'm sorry to hear that! I think you should use a Template:Warningbox. You should probably put it at the top of the article, right under the pagebanner. You can copy the box right under "The template can be invoked as follows:", but make sure to edit the content of the template appropriately. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:12, 30 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks you. Sunfish dash (talk) 07:42, 30 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Typhoon Ragasa was a pretty significant storm that likely affected areas covered by several WV articles. A similar warningbox might be appropriate for those places (but please remove it after an appropriate amount of time....sometimes those warningboxes still appear on articles years after the event has passed). Minor error

[edit]

On American football, the map (using {{Mapframe}}) in the "National Football League" section says:

?'"`UNIQ--maplink-00000001-QINU`"'

I've seen things like this before on Wikimedia projects. It's some coding error. Can someone remove this? ~2025-27593-50 (talk) 22:15, 3 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

I don't see that either on the page or when enlarging the map to full page on my Apple laptop. What browser are you using on what hardware? Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:24, 3 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
I'm seeing something similar in the map at Dubai#Fares. For me (Firefox, Chrome, and Safari on Mac; and Firefox and Chrome on Android) the string "`UNIQ--maplink-0000002D-QINU`" shows up in the middle of the caption. I'm seeing this issue on the desktop version of Wikivoyage but not the mobile version. —Granger (talk · contribs) 12:48, 4 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Comes up in every mapframe for me (Chrome on Mac and Safari on iOS) – iirc it's been a known issue for some time, no idea what it might be. //shb (t | c | m) 13:28, 4 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
On Windows 11, I don't see it when logged in and using Firefox, but I do see it when not logged in on Chrome and Edge. On Edge, I didn't see it if I reloaded the Dubai page after logging in. AlasdairW (talk) 14:16, 4 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Who's knowledgeable about mapframe code? @Andree.sk: Any ideas on this? —Granger (talk · contribs) 15:32, 4 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
This issue was last raised just over a month ago. The UNIQ--maplink string is printed because of Parsoid, and is a known and tracked bug. Wauteurz (talk) 16:31, 4 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
