The horizontal triband on the national flag of Ghana comprises red, yellow, and green, serving as a replacement for the British Gold Coast’s Blue Ensign. Crafted by renowned Ghanaian artist Theodosia Okoh in the year of Ghana’s independence, March 6, 1957, the flag was initially hoisted until 1964, only to be reinstated in 1966. The Ethiopian Pan-African colours—red, yellow, and green—grace the flag with a distinctive black five-pointed star positioned at the centre of the gold stripe. Ghana’s flag, the second on the African continent to adopt these colours after the Ethiopian Empire, was pivotal in influencing the design of Guinea-Bissau’s flag in 1973.
