Platja d'Aro is in Costa Brava. It is an important center for commerce and daytime and nighttime leisure on the Costa Brava. The town boasts more than 2 km of beach and a set of coves that complement its landscape.
Understand
[edit]The small neighbourhood of Fenals d'Aro, which had only 113 inhabitants at the beginning of the 20th century, developed during the tourist boom of the 1960s, and in 1962, it changed its name to the current one, Platja d'Aro. It has about 32 hotels, 1,600 apartments, and three campgrounds, which have often altered the landscape.
The first seaside line features several tall buildings (for example, a 1969 regulation allowed construction up to 58 m in height).

[edit]- 1 Platja de Sa Conca (it can be accessed by vehicle through the private development and on foot along the coastal path). It is divided into two sections by a rock formation that juts out into the sea and is called the islet of Sa Conca. Oriented to the east, it has a total length of 384 m and a width that varies between 5 and 70 m. Made up of very coarse sand, the slope of entry into the water is very steep. The bottom of the water at Sa Conca is sandy, while that of Cala dels Oriços is rocky.
- 2 Platja de Port d'Aro (Punta Prima). It is a semi-natural beach, with a length of 475 m, flanked by a pine forest and the Vall d'Or campsite.
- 3 Platja Gran d'Aro (platja Llarga). It is a long, very linear and open sandbar, which extends from the mouth of the Ridaura River to the south, and to the north it borders Punta d'en Ramis. Oriented to the east-southeast, it is 1,500 m long and has a width that varies between 40 and 70 m, made up of coarse golden sand. The slope of the entrance to the water is very steep and the bottom is sandy. The entire beach is flanked by a lively promenade where there are bars, restaurants and hotels. It has all kinds of services: toilets, showers, lifeguard, first aid station, ramps for people with reduced mobility, taverns, sunbeds and parasols for rent, children's play areas and centres for practicing nautical activities.
- 4 Cala Rovira. Oriented to the southeast, it is 219 m long and varies between 35 and 40 m wide, made up of coarse golden sand. The slope of the entrance to the water is somewhat steep, with a sandy bottom at the entrance to the sea, and rocks a few meters away. It has all the services: lifeguards, showers, toilets, first aid point, ramps for people with reduced mobility, children's area and rental of sun loungers, parasols and pedal boats. In the afternoon it immediately becomes shaded. At the northern end begins the coastal path, which runs through the small coves until reaching the large sandy beach of Sant Antoni de Calonge.
- 5 Cala sa Cova (it is accessed by stairs that go down from the coastal path Cami de Ronda). It is surrounded by pine trees and cliffs, which give it the appearance of a miniature bay. Oriented to the east-southeast, it is 38 m long and has an average width of 12 m, made up of medium and coarse sand, with a slight slope at the entrance to the sea. The bottom is sandy at first, but soon becomes rocky. There are small boats moored on the sand. It does not have any services.
- 6 Cala del Pi (it is accessed on foot along the coastal path, which in this section has characteristic arches). Located in an urbanized area, surrounded by pine trees, which give the cove its name, it is 43 m long and 14 m wide, made up of medium and coarse sand, with a gentle slope into the water, and a rocky bottom. It does not have any services.
- 7 Cala dels Canyers. Oriented to the east-southeast, it has a length of 32 m and an average width of 7 m, made up of coarse sand and gravel. Nudism is practiced there. Continuing from the beach, on the north side, and forming the same area, there is the Cala del Paller, a very rocky area with complicated access, which reaches the rock formation called Belladona Grossa.
