City articles don't normally have subsidiary articles for only one of their districts, but Chinese political subdivisions are complicated. What is the status of Shunde within Foshan? Should it be breadcrumbed to Foshan city or a larger region, should it be merged and redirected to Foshan, should Foshan be completely districted or what? - There was some related discussion at Wikivoyage:Travellers' pub#Articles being edited by my students this semester. Shunde is legally administered as part of Foshan, but it has its own identity and is a fairly prominent destination, and our article for it is reasonably well developed, so I don't think it would help travellers to merge it here. I think the current setup (where Shunde is a city article breadcrumbed to Pearl River Delta) is okay, but I'm open to the idea of districtifying Foshan and making Shunde one of the districts. Districtifying would make sense if we get more content – this article doesn't have very many listings right now, but Foshan has about 10 million people and multiple urban cores with their own identities, so I think it could support multiple articles in principle. @STW932: Any thoughts? —Granger (talk · contribs) 20:24, 21 December 2025 (UTC)
- I haven't been to Shunde but I had a look at it on Baidu Maps and I noticed that Shunde's downtown area is about 40 kilometres from Foshan's downtown area. In other words, Shunde's downtown area is actually further away from Foshan's downtown area than Guangzhou's, which would seem to me to be reasonable grounds for maintaining Shunde as a separate article (by contrast, the centre of Nanhai District is a mere 3 km away from Foshan's city centre). - That said, I would also be open to making Shunde part of a districtified Foshan in the future. STW932 (talk) 23:28, 21 December 2025 (UTC)

- The Chinese term that translates as "district" is important in administration, but is not always important to travellers & therefore does not determine WV city/district structures. Sometimes we have WV articles on areas smaller than an administrative district, e.g. Gulangyu or Shanghai/Old_City. Quite often we treat administrative districts in separate articles. e.g. The Suzhou article includes this text:
- Suzhou is a prefecture-level city in the Chinese system of administration, which makes the name "Suzhou" somewhat ambiguous; it can refer either to the city itself or to the entire administrative area. This article covers the city; some towns within the administrative area — Kunshan, Changshu, Zhangjiagang, Taicang and Wujiang — have separate articles.
- See Fuzhou#Districts for another example, & Talk:Fuzhou for discussion.
- I'd say Shunde is another case like this & merits its own article. Pashley (talk) 23:24, 21 December 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks, everyone. So my next question is: should Shunde be listed and linked in a "Towns" section in this article, as it currently is? That is what gave rise to my questions. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:26, 21 December 2025 (UTC)
- I'd say probably not. A town is also an administrative unit and there are six towns in Shunde. It would probably be best if we renamed the section as 'Districts' and made it a subsection of 'Understand' (which is what we have done for several other prefecture-level cities that have not yet been districtified). STW932 (talk) 23:42, 21 December 2025 (UTC)
- That's OK with me. I think that section should say something about how Foshan has x-number of districts, but that they are usually thought of as separate cities with their own identities and treated as such on this site, or something like that. Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:06, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
- There are many examples of how this problem, which is pervasive in China, can be handled. In addition to those mentioned above, see Xiamen#Orientation. Pashley (talk) 01:22, 25 December 2025 (UTC)
- Right, I remember we had a discussion about that. Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:03, 25 December 2025 (UTC)
