市のレベルで、神戸と姫路をあげるなら、堺もあげるべき。関東では、東京・横浜・千葉・川崎になっているので、政令指定都市はあげるべきだろう。

関西
[edit]Kinki is more accurate than Kansai. To many people, Kansai refers only to Kobe, Kyoto, and Osaka. "Kansai" should be mentioned on a Kinki page. Not the otherway around.
- In Japanese, yes. But in English "Kansai" is used a lot more 11,100,000 vs 4,640,000. (WT-en) Jpatokal 13:18, 10 August 2006 (EDT)
Eat
[edit]そば飯 is a relatively new invention, probably only around +/-10-15 years old.
- Yeah, it probably belongs more in the Kobe article — a 難波っ子 friend of mine has never eaten the stuff. (WT-en) Jpatokal 12:32, 7 February 2007 (EST)
"Takarazuka - Famous for its all women theater"Perhaps all-female cabaret/review/performances better?
Misplaced on Map
[edit]I notice two locations are misplaced on the map: 1. Shingu - Shingu is the easternmost city in Wakayama Prefecture, but the map places it in Mie. 2. Mount Hiei is placed in Kyoto, but it should be in Shiga. The mountain and temple complex are part of Otsu which is in Shiga ChubbyWimbus (talk) 14:15, 22 November 2013 (UTC)
Kyō-kotoba is «effete»
[edit]I am translating of the page into French, I don't known how to translate "elegant and effete Kyo-kotoba". Wiktionary gives two meanings:
- Decadent, weak through self-indulgence.
- Effeminate
I searched a bit, but I could not find which one. Any idea? - Fabimaru (talk) 16:59, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
- "There are many subdialects, ranging from the elegant and effete Kyo-kotoba (京言葉) of Kyoto's courtiers to the gruff but imaginative gangster slang of Osaka, much favored by Japanese comedians." My guess is that if the other end of the spectrum is perceived as the language of some yakuzas with guns, tattoos and golden teeth and stuff, "effete" would mean the language of fine upper class ladies, geishas etc. in other words effeminate. ϒpsilon (talk) 17:29, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
- This might be a bit too much stereotypical to say, but in addition to what Ypsilon said above, I guess there is some association with femininity or unmasculinity, despite the fact that Kyo-kotoba is also spoken by males. The dialect/topolect is also known to use euphemisms to a greater extent than others. Whym (talk) 12:33, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks! I'm unfamiliar with the subject (and know about ten words of Japanese) and was just trying to analyze what the article said. :) ϒpsilon (talk) 14:12, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
- I wouldn't use the word "effeminate", because I don't think people would necessarily view a male speaker as homosexual, but they might think it was odd or too polite. The Kyoto dialect is considered to be charming and beautiful for women to speak, though. ChubbyWimbus (talk) 17:14, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you. I think that I will only let "elegant" (in French) for now as I cannot see any word to express that concept. - Fabimaru (talk) 17:52, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

Page banner suggestion
[edit]The current banner is of poor quality. Here is a new candidate. /Yvwv (talk) 01:12, 10 July 2017 (UTC)
- I much prefer the current banner to this banner. These non-descript, uninspired "could be anywhere"-type of landscape banners are so boring to me, but I'm open to new banners. Kansai is the cradle of Japanese culture and civilization. I imagine the best banner reflecting that somehow. ChubbyWimbus (talk) 16:18, 10 July 2017 (UTC)
- I agree with ChubbyWimbus (but don't have anything to propose, the region being large and diverse it's not easy to reflect several aspects in one photo). — Fabimaru (talk) 19:39, 10 July 2017 (UTC)
- Looking for something more cultural. The current banner is conceptually good, but visually poor. /Yvwv (talk) 19:52, 10 July 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, the current banner is actually far superior in content, albeit not in photographic quality. A quick look at c:Category:Kansai_region doesn't seem to offer any obvious alternatives? --Andrewssi2 (talk) 20:21, 10 July 2017 (UTC)
- A second candidate from Nara, for which the only featured banners are close-up photos of buildings. /Yvwv (talk) 00:40, 11 July 2017 (UTC)
- @Yvwv: Stumbled across this, I prefer banner 2, 3 and then 0. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 21:38, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
