And let me just add a prop(s) for the work you are doing improving Okayama, keep it up and we will be able to feature it on DOTM or OtBP. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 09:10, 19 February 2009 (EST)
- Thanks from me too! But please do create the articles for the places you just added to Off the beaten track in Japan, red links in that list aren't much use to anyone... (WT-en) Jpatokal 09:39, 19 February 2009 (EST)
- One more voice to add to the chorus - your name has been showing up a lot on Special:Recentchanges lately, and the cleanups and other additions you've made have been very much appreciated. Thanks! -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 11:55, 11 March 2009 (EDT)
Japan edits
[edit]Hi ChubbyWimbus, I suggest that you add a write up about the image that I added (and you removed eventually) because that is one of the most important temples not only in Kyoto but in Japan but I don't see it anywhere in this article. thanks Sunkissedguy (talk) 02:07, 13 May 2014 (UTC)
I was just looking at the bar information you added to Japan, and I was wondering whether some of it would be better in Drink rather that Respect. I think its about nightlife, and bars, so that it should go in the Drink section. What do you think? --(WT-en) Inas 00:12, 20 February 2009 (EST)
- Actually, now that you've brought it up, I think you are probably right. I initially saw the "Gay Travellers" headline and decided to add more information without noticing that it was under the heading "Respect". I placed it under the "Drink" Category as requested, but I feel that it seems out-of-place, as "Gay Bars" is not a drink and the rest of the subcategories are drinks... I think the information I posted is at least of SOME value, but it doesn't seem to belong in any of the categories... Do you think it looks okay as it is? (As a sidenote from a newbie: How can I contact you or other users through their pages? Is it best just to keep the threads here on my page?)
- It does look out of place where you put it among the list of drinks. How about up higher under the Where to drink section? (WT-en) Texugo 02:05, 20 February 2009 (EST)
- Thanks for the suggestion. Although it would look better if other types of bars or nightclubs were listed, I think perhaps the gay bars have found their place. If you think it still looks out of place though, feel free to comment or even to play around with it yourself, if you have an idea on how best to present the topic. Thanks for pointing it out. I definitely do not intend to make things sloppy with my additions. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 03:45, 20 February 2009 (EST)
- The gay bar info was listed twice in Drink...? I trimmed it down to one paragraph in "Where to drink". It would be great if you could add some listings of individual places to Tokyo/Shinjuku and Osaka. (WT-en) Jpatokal 01:13, 21 February 2009 (EST)
- I've added 5 or so of the best reviewed gay clubs/bars in Osaka, making it look like quite a queer-friendly city, since there are not that many other listings. haha. It also highlights the need to format the previous entries. If I get time I'll do that. I'll try to get some listings for Tokyo within the next couple days. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 03:58, 21 February 2009 (EST)
Ranting
[edit]Hey, just wanted to make sure you understand that my little rant was absolutely not directed towards you. On a totally separate note, I've noticed that isIn and geo|lat|long tags are appearing after you signatures. You should only need to sign with the four tildes (~~~~). --(WT-en) Peter Talk 18:58, 5 March 2009 (EST)
- Oh, that's fine! As someone said, I'm still rather new, and although I try not to do stupid things, like reporting content from the founders, I see that it happens. My concern was really with the star status, and I'm surprised that it turned into such a lengthy debate! I will test that signature out now. Thanks! (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 05:19, 6 March 2009 (EST)
Kurashiki
[edit]Do you have descriptions that you're planning to add for the Tamashima and Kojima area listings that you added to Kurashiki? (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 02:23, 11 May 2009 (EDT)
- Ah, I would have to think about that. The Kojima area is fairly well-known. The Tamashima area is less so, except that it has the Shinkansen line. What sort of information would you suggest putting there? The Kojima area is most famous for views of the Seto Inland Sea, although the Jeans Factory and a few of the temples/shrines are well known. The Tamashima area isn't well advertised in English or Japanese. I have more information about it, but I'd have to find it... (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 07:51, 11 May 2009 (EDT)
- I'd suggest putting addresses and descriptions for the listings that are there, such as — where is Entsu-ji? When is the Seto Ohashi Bridge Museum open? Why should a traveler make the time to visit the Shimotsui Castle Ruins? That sort of information. (Names alone don't do anybody much good.) (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 08:31, 11 May 2009 (EDT)
- Oh, I misunderstood. I thought you wanted a nicer general description of the areas! Sorry. I can start working on adding some of this information. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 08:36, 11 May 2009 (EDT)
- I'd suggest putting addresses and descriptions for the listings that are there, such as — where is Entsu-ji? When is the Seto Ohashi Bridge Museum open? Get out
[edit]I appreciate the effort, but I'm not really sure it's sensible to list neighboring prefectures in the "Get out" sections, and there's been some talk about removing it from region templates entirely. People go to attractions, not prefectures... (WT-en) Jpatokal 09:32, 15 May 2009 (EDT)

Kyoto Districts
[edit]I've added a couple of notes to Talk:Kyoto on the matter of moving to district sub-pages. Please let me know what you think. For my part, I think the main article is getting too long and unwieldy for its own good; it's probably time we spun off at least a couple of districts (to start) in order to improve readability. (Full disclosure: I'm posting this same message on the Talk pages of other users who have actively participated on Talk:Kyoto in the past. No spamming intended.) --(WT-en) Diego de Manila 21:13, 22 May 2009 (EDT)
- Should it be useful, the pre-sorted hotel listings for all districts are in (WT-en) my sandbox. Also some replacement text for the main article once all the districts are live, though eventually it needs to be expanded a bit (really, what is there to say about midrange hotels?) - (WT-en) Dguillaime 01:42, 21 June 2009 (EDT)
I just clicked rollback on this, noticing what appeared to be random chars in the text. But I noticed that I reverted your change, so I apologise if I stomped on something when you were in the middle of doing something. --(WT-en) inas 21:56, 10 June 2009 (EDT)
- I don't know what happened, I was trying to revert the same change as you, I think. Anyhow I have fixed it now. Thanks. --(WT-en) inas 22:08, 10 June 2009 (EDT)
Chugoku
[edit]I'm working on a Chugoku map. I'm currently including the top nine cities as listed in the Chugoku article, plus Iwakuni and Onomichi. Are there any other Chugoku cities/locations you have plans for, so I can include them? (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 21:39, 12 June 2009 (EDT)
- Probably just those two regions for now. But if you're planning to work extensively on any of the Chugoku or Shikoku prefecture pages, let me know — it wouldn't be hard to break out an individual prefecture and do a solo map for it. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 23:54, 17 June 2009 (EDT)
Okayama
[edit]I'd suggest leaving that Momotaro paragraph at the top of 'See', since (as it states) the statues are scattered throughout the city — they're something to look for, wherever the traveler goes. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 11:54, 14 June 2009 (EDT)

Adachi Museum
[edit]>I noticed you deleted the comment "the museum often feels a bit too stuffy and pretentious"
If you feel that should remain then by all means put it back. I enjoy art, but pretty much all art museums seem pretentious to me. So calling an art museum pretentious seemed unnecessary, especially one with largely modern art.
>I think the description needs to counter all the glossy reviews to say that it is not quite as nice as other sources may lead people to believe.
Fair enough, but almost everything written in the museum description before sounded rather negative. Seemed to me a place rated #1 in the world should at least mention that. I was trying to present data, like that most of the art is modern art. People who like art probably will then not go in expecting traditional style art.
>I believe this garden was voted "Best in Japan" (not the world) by the American Journal of Gardeners magazine
That write up sounds much more balanced. I think it was rated best Japanese garden in the world (not best garden), which you WOULD rather expect to be in Japan.

Discover help
[edit]Thanks much for the help with Project:Discover; it's excellent to have someone putting in new trivia. One request, however. When you do, please make sure the new trivium goes at the end of the "Upcoming" list rather than interspersed with other items. The list is treated as a FIFO stack and sequencing works best if new stuff is added at the bottom. Anyway, thanks for the help! (WT-en) Bill-on-the-Hill 23:50, 29 July 2009 (EDT)

Tottori Map
[edit]Thanks, I added those two listings to the map. Anything you can recall from the Tottori City History Museum that might enliven the description? An example of one of the exhibits would do. As for the Ekimae Market, I'd put it under 'Buy' if it has a significant amount of non-edible souvenirs, 'Eat' if a traveler could get a meal there (or could, say, put together a picnic basket for the dunes that's significantly better than what they could grab at a convenience store), and 'Drink' if you're intending to highlight a specific bar there. If it's just a local produce market, I'd probably omit it. (WT-en) Gorilla Jones 01:16, 27 August 2009 (EDT)

Muscat, Matrah and Oman
[edit]As a general point, the whole of Oman is under-developed and I recently put out a plea on the talk page for some clarity and help with regionalisation, but nothing back yet. As for Matrah and Muscat; Matrah (Muttrah) is a officially a separate city but it is to all intents and purposes part of the modern city of Muscat, both of which are in the region of Muscat. I think there should be one city article called Muscat which includes Matrah and a parent region article (maybe also called Muscat). This is quite important as major tourist draws like the amazing Al-Bustan Palace Hotel, the Port Corniche, Muttrah Fort and the Gold Souk are all officially in Matrah. A quite wonderful country by the way and I fully intend to explore more fully one day. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 02:40, 15 December 2009 (EST)
- Until the country is properly regionalised, it is hard to get a clear picture. I am fairly sure though that Matrah is not really a separate article. If the city of Muscat were districtified, then it could be along with Ruwi and others (but that will never be necessary). From a traveller's POV, Matrah is no more a separate city than Westminster or Southwark are separate cities from London. On the regions I suspect we will end up with only 3 or 4 (including the Empty Quarter). I would also add though that I do not wish to potray myself as an informed expert on either Muscat or Oman :). I really am not and have spent a total of 14 days in the country. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 03:53, 15 December 2009 (EST)
- As an update, thought you might be like to know that I have finished regionalising Oman. The regions work quite well I think and the map makes sense. Also done a fair bit of work on the country article and some sub-articles. We are now almost doing justice to the place. I have put up Matrah as a merge candidate as earlier surmised. Cheers. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 11:30, 13 January 2010 (EST)
Bangkok
[edit]Thanks a lot for helping listingifying at Bangkok/Phahonyothin! :) --(WT-en) globe-trotter 19:36, 5 February 2010 (EST)
- Since I have no real knowledge of Bangkok, listingifying is the easiest (albeit tedious) way for me to make myself useful. You've been doing all the actual work! I really like the collaboration idea, so I think it's good to help! If I have time, perhaps I'll see if there are other easy tasks I could do. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 02:50, 7 February 2010 (EST)
Hi! I saw that you changed the top picture in the Germany article. The Brandenburg gate is the main symbol for Germany (especially concerning the reunification) while the Augustusburg is totally unknown. It might be a better picture but when it comes to symbols there is no other universal agreed that represents Germany. (WT-en) jan 09:20, 12 April 2010 (EDT)

ASL
[edit]Twice now you've changed the wording in United States#Talk about ASL; is there something wrong with the previous wording? What kind of problem are you trying to fix? I ask because it seems the changed wording is a bit awkward and misses some of the nuance I was trying to convey. (WT-en) LtPowers 11:42, 3 February 2011 (EST)
- As it reads, "The dominant sign language in the U.S. is American Sign Language, or ASL" it seemed redundant to have sign language written twice, but "dominant sign language" sounds awkward to me, because it's really just THE sign language of the US. I was hoping to shorten it and get rid of what I thought was redundancy. I had originally used "For the deaf" or "Deaf Americans use" to sort of shadow the "For the blind" in the next paragraph. Who else uses it (aside from those who want to communicate with the deaf) that made that seem wrong? (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 16:43, 3 February 2011 (EST)
- ASL interpreters and children of deaf adults often use sign language, as do many people who want to be able to communicate without sound (say, while scuba diving, between automobiles, at a long distance or across a crowded room) and some parents with their infants. I understand your point about redundancy, but I think trying to avoid it in this case is going to be too awkward. Like saying "The dominant cable news network is CNN" or "the most popular bar and grill in the area is Bob's Bar and Grill" or "the best hot dogs are at Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs", it's not really redundant at all. (WT-en) LtPowers
- The groups are almost all deaf or those who are communicating with the deaf though. Those listed that are not are probably a small minority of signers who I don't think would be offended if we did say "deaf", but even if we don't alter that part, can we get rid of "dominant"? It makes it seem as though there is another standard used, but ASL is the only type of American sign language that I have ever seen used. I realize that it's possible for speakers of other languages to use their sign language in the US, but I wouldn't consider any of them to be a competing standard in America. (WT-en) ChubbyWimbus 00:01, 4 February 2011 (EST)
- Some signers prefer Signed Exact English, cued speech, or other transliterations of English rather than the natural language ASL. Granted, those aren't languages per se, but there doesn't seem to be a better catch-all term for the various real-time visual communication methods available in the U.S. Also, I note (coincidentally) that wikipedia:American Sign Language also says "is the dominant sign language". (WT-en) LtPowers 09:05, 4 February 2011 (EST)

I was about to nominate Japan's_Top_3 for deletion because although it has a lot of listings, I don't see what what value it is adding (i.e. no descriptions, locations, itineraries). I did however look at the history section and noticed that you were a major contributor, so I thought I would ask your feelings first. Thanks! Andrewssi2 (talk) 12:54, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
- They are semi-official lists and very popular among Japan travelers. The sites are too far apart to make them reasonable itineraries on their own. Travelers who plan to visit the sites on one of the list are best served by clicking on each city and planning a fuller trip that includes whatever top 3 list they choose to complete. Many travelers also use the list as a sort of recommendation for each category, so they use it to help decide on worthwhile sites (ex: Korakuen Garden must be a worthwhile garden, because it's one of the top three).
- If it were an arbitrary list, I would say delete, but these lists are very well-known and popular travel topics, so I would definitely vote to keep it. ChubbyWimbus (talk) 15:05, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
- OK sure thing. I didn't realize the format was popular with Japanese. Thanks --Andrewssi2 (talk) 23:29, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
Taketomi OtBP nom

Admin?
[edit]You were accidentally an admin for a while, but would you consider becoming one for real? I saw that you felt at the time when your accidental adminship was revoked that you wouldn't be able to do the patrolling required of an admin. But I think there are enough people doing thorough recent changes patrols, and the way you could most help with your admin tools, if you accept them, is by deleting spam and blocking spammers when you come across them, and otherwise, just continuing the work you've been doing. You can read about admin tools here. Let me know whether you'd accept a mop; your participation in all facets of this site has been most admirable, and in whatever capacity you choose to contribute, I'm sure your work will remain great.

I see that you got into scuffle with another editor.
[edit]I see that you got into a scuffle with another editor. Do you want my advice? Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 12:53, 2 September 2017 (UTC)
- I hope that my bringing attention to the recurring issue and many contributors echoing what has basically been said over and over about redlinks will be enough to dissuade the user from further redlink deletions and discussions. I'd rather keep the conversation contained, so I think if you think something more needs to be said/done, it'd be best to bring it up as part of the same discussion [3] discussion, so that everyone is on the same page. Language policing
[edit]CW, bringing this to your talk page because it is not about Berlin. I don't find your comments
- "I do think you can be too voracious in your attempts to make writing concise (and perhaps taking Wikivoyage:Words to avoid list too seriously). Sometimes it makes things clearer but other times I agree that it hampers lively language and writing. Maybe you could let up a bit on language policing?"
to be very helpful. A broad-brush knock on my editing doesn't help that discussion, especially when you seem to agree with me about that specific dispute. What would be helpful would be for you to give some specific examples that I can consider and that we can discuss. Otherwise, it seems like you're saying "this is all good but back off". That doesn't give me much to go on. Regards, Ground Zero (talk) 14:57, 19 October 2019 (UTC)
- CW. This was mentioned back in 2019, and now I think we (I and Ground Zero) need to bring this up again. So, please explain whether you think this is appropriate:
Making personal attacks on not just one but two users on Wikivoyage, made three people feel like not wanting to engage in the discussion, and when I and GZ brought up the issue with your and Pashley's tone (calling it as harmful), you called it as "language-policing", while you and Pashley were the ones who started with the loose talk?
- I'm asking you. Reconsider the way you write your messages, and avoid personal attacks and being hypocritical. Also, you never apologised to either GZ or I.
- Disappointing...
- Users need to be able to state how they feel certain things are affecting the site. As WhatamIDoing pointed out in that discussion, "harmful" doesn't necessarily mean it's egregious or that a single edit of that nature will destroy the site, and I'll add that it also doesn't mean purposeful. Maybe you think that myself or others think these edits are purposefully harmful? I don't think anyone thinks that. I certainly don't. I was discussing what I believe to be unintended results. As another example, spelling errors and poor grammar are "harmful", because they affect user trust and site usability however, saying that doesn't mark ESL editors who are prone to those kinds of errors as bad or unwelcome.
- I found it unfair for you to ask for proof as to why some redirects could be seen as "harmful" and then when I provided it, you ignored my explanation and just called it "uncivil" and a "personal attack" and then asked again "Could you please explain how?" I don't know how you expect anyone to be able to explain without using real edits, but if real edits are cited, you call it a "personal attack". That seems disingenuous to me. You directly stated to Pashley "if I may bring this up, but this is about the language used here in "unnecessary & harmful". That is language policing. All Pashley said was, "I think some redirects are unnecessary & harmful." There was nothing uncivil or offensive about that. I think your reaction and your appeal to stop using certain words is unreasonable.
- I can see a few places where the wording could have been seen as offensive to GZ, but concerning that thread and us, I didn't say anything about you or your edits at all. You keep saying "me and GZ" but I don't see you two as being the same in that thread. My responses to GZ are to him alone, not you, and my responses to you are to you, not him. I don't see where I was "uncivil" towards you, as you claimed. ChubbyWimbus (talk) 13:06, 27 July 2021 (UTC)
- I'm not appealing for you to censor all your speech and etc. I'm just asking you to make it less direct at people. Also, whether you meant it or not, I had assumed this was at me since it was right under the Khancoban thread. See this statement:
"research, consideration of the destination, consideration of what information is being lost or a commitment to moving all information in the article to the target redirect should be seen as requirements in order to redirect. Otherwise, just leave the article alone"
- But anyway, I'm stepping back from this discussion and will take a break. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 13:16, 27 July 2021 (UTC)
One more thing.
[edit]Infact, there's one more thing you can do now. And that is apologize to Ground Zero for your personal attacks and confirm that you'll never do that again. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 22:15, 27 July 2021 (UTC)
- I did apologize to him, and I'm not sure what you mean by "never do that again". I could very well use an edit by him in a future discussion to make some sort of point. I cannot tell any user that I will never question, dispute, or bring up an edit of theirs in a discussion. ChubbyWimbus (talk) 13:34, 28 July 2021 (UTC)
An award for you!

Thank you for articulating my points regarding fuji-izu-hakone NP better than i could ever do and helping me turn it into an extra hierarchal region. Also thank you for creating the NP of Japan article. Tai123.123 (talk) 19:11, 22 October 2021 (UTC) |

Ibara and other Dark Sky Places
[edit]Have you ever considered adding not only Ibara, Japan, but also any other dark sky places for that matter? -- Apisite (talk) 04:57, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
- If the information is relevant to travelers, you may add it to other articles. I stated that the information you added to Ibara was interesting, but I do not have personal knowledge about "dark sky places". Do you have someplace in mind that you want to add this information about? ChubbyWimbus (talk) 12:01, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
- I mean adding any Dark Sky Parks to your travel wishlist. --Apisite (talk) 23:41, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
- I have actually been to Ibara, although not to the observatory. I'm honestly not familiar with other Dark Sky Parks. It's difficult to visit these places, especially without a car, because they are typically isolated and you need to be there at night, which means there is no way to get back to a station/hotel.
