Arthur's True Value Hardware listing
[edit]
- I have read the Wikivoyage:Policies and the Wikivoyage:Listings#Boring places and I see no specific prohibition for hardware stores. I have also found dozens of other hardware stores listed. The Policies Prime Directive is to list what is best from the Traveller's prospective. The page Stay safe#Possessions suggests purchasing supplies "at any hardware store". There are many type of travellers: planes, trains, automobiles, hikers and RV's. Hikers and RV travellers are frequently in need of stuff found in hardware stores. - BuffaloBob: see also Wikivoyage:Goals and non-goals, which states that Wikivoyage is not intended to be a Yellow Pages. In practice, what that has meant on our site is that any individual businesses that are listed in "Buy" should be of some special interest to visitors. Certainly travellers may need to visit a hardware store while out of town. But there's usually very little difference between one hardware store and another, and they're easy enough to find when you need one. If there's something about Arthur's that sets it apart from other hardware stores so much that it's worthy of attention as a curiosity, then by all means argue in favor of its inclusion. But in my own personal experience as a Western New York native, aside from Arthur's somewhat quaint location in Orchard Park's small-town downtown, it's pretty much par for the course as far as what's on the shelves. -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 19:01, 31 August 2014 (UTC)
- Is the building or store attractive as a turn-of-the-20th-century building? Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:14, 31 August 2014 (UTC)
- The setting is attractive as a turn-of-the-century streetscape, but the building itself, not so much. -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 19:29, 31 August 2014 (UTC)
- The building is worth mentioning, some of the individual products currently in the description are out-of-scope because they're not travel-related. While there are about a dozen destinations with a "True Value" hardware listing, "Weber grills, Stihl power equipment, Toro mowers & snow throwers, Scott's lawn care products" are primarily of use to home owners, not short-term visitors. The listing should be formatted more like "Buy: Downtown central business district. The imposing Arthur's building has been home to a hardware store since 1907, ...whatever..." but only list individual items for sale if they're of use to travellers. - K7L, that is an excellent recommendation. If everyone else is in agreement I will take down the identity and link to the individual business and create a general listing for that business area, known as "The Four Corners". Thanks to everyone for their helpful comments. BuffaloBob (talk) 21:49, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
