Welcome
[edit]Hello Upamanyuwikitravel! Welcome to Wikivoyage. Please take a sec to look at our copyleft and policies and guidelines, but feel free to plunge forward and edit some pages. Scanning the Manual of style, especially the article templates, can give you a good idea of how we like articles formatted. If you need help, check out Project:Help, and if you need some info not on there, post a message in the travellers' pub. (WT-en) Ryan 06:41, 16 November 2006 (EST)
Sacred sites
[edit]Good job on the Hindu section of Sacred sites. With regard to respect, what about mentioning the rules about vegetarian food, leather shoes, and alcohol at Hindu temples - necessary? (WT-en) WindHorse 11:30, 1 March 2007 (EST)
- Adding the festivals is a good idea, and if finally the consensus is to change the focus of the article, the info will still be useful. When a village or city itself is considered sacred, such as Bodh Gaya or Varanasi, then the town is listed first, but when town is not equal to the sacred site, then the temple is listed as the sacred site and the town as the place where it is located. For example, we talk about Haridwar or Varanasi as being sacred cities, but Delhi? The same principle is used in the 'Other destinations' section on the India article. (WT-en) WindHorse 06:29, 2 March 2007 (EST)
Yes
[edit]Yes, my young friend, what can I do for you? (WT-en) WindHorse 09:27, 3 March 2007 (EST)
- First question: I think start with the major festivals, because the general sacred sites article is aimed more for providing info for casual tourists. More specific info relating to local festivals can be given on the pilgrimage itineraries. Likewise, with symbols, I think just add the common ones that tourists will see on short visits to major temples and encounter in restaurants, dhal bhat and chai stores. Otherwise, we will end up with a telephone directory of symbols, which rather than helping tourists gain some basic understanding about the things they encounter, will confuse them. At least that is my feeling. What do you think? (WT-en) WindHorse 09:39, 3 March 2007 (EST)
- Second question: If it can be done neatly and precisely, like with the train schedule for Guangzhou, then, yes, maybe it is a good idea. However, it is going to be a huge list that dominates the page, then maybe not. If you check, most cities don't have the schedules listed, and mostly for that reason. However, as Shimla is small and doesn't have either a frequent train or plane service, it might be ok. What's your opinion? Usually when I consider adding a schedule, I try to see it from both the prospective of the benefits to travelers as well as the overall aesthetics of the article. (WT-en) WindHorse 09:51, 3 March 2007 (EST)
South African Languages
[edit]The 11 official languages are:
In addition to the official languages there are a number of others that are in common use as there are large Indian, Portuguese, French, Italian, German, Greek and Chinese communities in South Africa.
Fanagalo, a language invented primarily for the mining industry is also in general use as a second language by hundreds of thousands of current and ex miners.

Happy Holi!
[edit]Hey! Hope you had a great holi yourself! I am at work at home, preparing for two meetings tomorrow :( — (WT-en) Ravikiran 05:22, 4 March 2007 (EST)
Time table
[edit]I've added the return timetable (after consulting Trains At A Glance) in the same format as yours. It looks neat as it is, so I'm not making it into a table. I've also added the flight schedule in a small table. Only the flights TO Chandigarh and Shimla are included. I copied the size from the Guangzhou article. Thanks. Take care — Upamanyuwikivoyage 07:38, 4 March 2007 (EST)
- It looks great. You did a good job. Take it easy. (WT-en) WindHorse 00:25, 5 March 2007 (EST)
- Thanks for the barnstar. Now I have two. Ravi gave me one before, but its in my archives. The Kolkata article is looking good, by the way. (WT-en) WindHorse 06:20, 5 March 2007 (EST)
- P.S. The Jagson Airlines site seems to be giving some trouble so I can't find the flight(s) to Kullu. As soon as I get the info, I'll update. Take care — Upamanyuwikivoyage • ( Talk ) • ( Travel )•
- Thanks for the update. I've never flown that airline, so I know nothing about their efficiency or scheduling. Take it easy. (WT-en) WindHorse 20:38, 6 March 2007 (EST)
Images
[edit]Wow! The images really enhance the quality of the article. Thanks for your efforts. They are appreciated. Also, Thanks also for the info on the airline. Maybe I can fly with them on future visits to Shimla or Leh, assuming, that is, they resume flights on that route. Take it easy. (WT-en) WindHorse 11:53, 7 March 2007 (EST)
Thane
[edit]I came back end of december (and got married). I am in fact busy, but I do manage to do some editing every year. — (WT-en) Ravikiran 07:12, 8 March 2007 (EST)
Sacred sites
[edit]How come the Jain section gave you so much trouble? It is supposed to be such a peaceful religion He He. Actually, thanks for all your efforts on the Sacred sites article. It is looking really great at the moment. Thanks also for the info on the Leh flights. (WT-en) WindHorse 11:08, 8 March 2007 (EST)
Kolkata
[edit]Are you placing Park Street under Maidan or Esplanade? I've been adding listings for Park Street, Sudder Street and J.L. Nehru Road (north of Park Street) under Esplanade. Where is the border between the two areas? Is it Middleton Street or south side of Park Street? Please advise. (WT-en) WindHorse 05:31, 9 March 2007 (EST)
- OK, but are we including Park Street under Esplanade or Maidan? At the moment we have got places on this street listed under both districts. Thanks. (WT-en) WindHorse 06:01, 9 March 2007 (EST)
- OK, but I'm wondering whether that might be too complicated for contributors. What if it was just simply like this: Park Street from Jl Neru Street to Rafi Ahmed Kidwel Road (sp?) is in Esplanade. From there the road is in Maidan until ? (not so familiar with East Kolkata). (WT-en) WindHorse 06:11, 9 March 2007 (EST)
- Sorry. I read your original explanation incorrectly. So, you are saying that none of Park Street will come under Eslanade - OK. Then how about Jl Neru Road - south of Park Street = Maidan and north = Esplanade? (WT-en) WindHorse 06:16, 9 March 2007 (EST)
- No need for a reply. I was tracing the names of places you gave in my head from memory, and somehow had Park Street Station a little more south than it actually is. Now, I have found a map and can follow your explanation. Yes, you are correct. It is very clear. Thanks. (WT-en) WindHorse 06:26, 9 March 2007 (EST)
Shimla
[edit]The Shimla article looks up to standard for DoM. Also, the Sacred sites article is looking good. I guess the Jains section needs some basic info at some point, but it can be done slowly. Take it easy. (WT-en) WindHorse 07:10, 9 March 2007 (EST)
- Thanks for correcting my sloppy edits on Shimla, and for adding info to the Jains section of Sacred sites. When I get the chance, I'll research some info for 'Understand'. I don't know too much about their religion, but as a vegetarian I've occasionally encountered Jains in veggie restaurants and we have spoken a little about their philosophy. (WT-en) WindHorse 10:19, 9 March 2007 (EST)
- I added the non-stop Indus Air flight from Bombay to Chandigarh, I didn't even know there was one! I hope the Shimla#By plane is not getting too long. Upamanyuwikitravel • ( Talk ) • ( Travel ) • 04:44, 10 March 2007 (EST)
- Hi, my young friend. At the moment I don't think the list of flights is too long, but do you think it is worth distinguishing between flights that go directly to Shimla and those that go only to Chandigarh because Chandigarh is still quite some distance from Shimla? (WT-en) WindHorse 06:49, 10 March 2007 (EST)
- Sorry. I just glanced at the list and it didn't click that IXC was the airport code for Chandigarh. Actually, it is very clear. Mea culpa. (WT-en) WindHorse 07:25, 10 March 2007 (EST)
Hindi
[edit]Hold on. Ask Evan if there is a language file already written up in Hindi. Translations of the MediaWiki php file are becoming increasingly available and complete, so before you go and start translating all the interface files be sure to ask him, if he doesn't already have access to a file. Then he may be able to get it online and you can start doing policy translation on the Hindi wiki. -- (WT-en) Sapphire • (Talk) • 05:59, 12 March 2007 (EDT)

While I'm bothering you
[edit]Since you're interested in linguistics you may be interested in checking out Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) OpenCourseWare [1]. It's free for anyone to use and is licensed under a Creative Commons license, albeit non-commercial. Anywho, they provide information about linguistics courses (Chinese, German, and French, come to mind) and resources. Of course, if you want to learn about other things such as the rise and fall of democracies they have that course too. -- (WT-en) Sapphire • (Talk) • 06:09, 12 March 2007 (EDT)
Hindi
[edit]I just took a peak at your sandbox - wow, have you been busy. When do you expect to launch the Hindi site? Anyway, I'm sorry I cannot help with this project, but I wish you good luck. (WT-en) WindHorse 12:17, 13 March 2007 (EDT)
Tilde
[edit]Howdy Upamanyu,
I just wanted to point out that the tilde (~) isn't always in the same place for everyone. As an example, on my laptop it's located near the space bar, however, since my laptop is going bonkers I had to purchase a new keyboard and on it the key is located near the "Escape" key. And when I switch to the German keyboard what pops up when I hit the key under the "Escape" key is "°". It might be wise not to advise anyone where exactly the tilde is on a keyboard, but then again it's not a big deal. -- (WT-en) Sapphire • (Talk) • 12:24, 14 March 2007 (EDT)

Hindi babel
[edit]Can you check out the babel templates for Hindi that I created (actually just copied the one for hi-3 that was made on shared and did my best to find appropriate words to swap out for each of the other levels). Let me know (or change them yourself) if you think there are better words to use for "beginner", intermediate", etc... scroll up to the English section on that page for what the boxes should roughly say – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 03:24, 19 March 2007 (EDT)

[edit]It's me who has been editing the main page of the Hindi Wikivoyage. I will hold off creating a username for a day in the hope that Evan will sort out the OpenId problems and I don't have to create a user. — (WT-en) Ravikiran 06:33, 21 March 2007 (EDT)
- Hey, congratulations of the successful launch of the HiWt. You've worked very hard. Let's hope that the site really takes off and your efforts are rewarded. Take it easy. (WT-en) WindHorse 10:52, 21 March 2007 (EDT)
- Hi. I took a look at the sidebar on HiWT, but I couldn't see a problem. Sorry. (WT-en) WindHorse 10:17, 23 March 2007 (EDT)
Suggestion
[edit]I suggest you don't quit over your failed admin application. As I said, see it as an experience and learn from it. Everyone is opposed by others at some time. That is part of life's experiences. You cannot change that any more than you can stop Delhi becoming an oven in April and May, but you can choose how you react. And, I think the best way to react is not to over-react, but instead try to see the situation from other people's view point. For example, if a new guy entered you class and you caught him out on a lie, would you trust him immediately after. Probably not, right? However, if he didn't lie again and he became your friend, then slowly you would forget about that transgression and he would gain your trust and confidence. However, it would take some time for that to happen. It wouldn't happen straight away, right? This situation is the same. So, try to see it from the admins point of view. They are not against you, but just need a little more time to regain their confidence. Can you understand that? So, I suggest that you just keep doing a good job, and within a few months I'm sure people will trust your judgment and you will be accepted as as admin. Anyway, personally I hope you hang around. You have been really helpful and have offered some very insightful and interesting comments. By the way, I'll probably be away from internet connections for a few weeks from next week, so I won't be active on WT. Take it easy. (WT-en) WindHorse 03:17, 23 March 2007 (EDT)
- Please stay, Upamanyu!
- Two months is not long to wait to try again.
- Quit now and you will prove your critics right...(WT-en) W. Frank 10:32, 23 March 2007 (EDT)

Trip
[edit]Hey, have a great school trip. I'm also probably going to be away from internet connection from this weekend, though I will be away longer than you. As for the Chinese WT, like the Japanese one, I'll just take a took a look at it every now and again, but I think I prefer to concentrate my efforts on the English version. There are more than a billion Chinese. They won't miss my help. (WT-en) WindHorse 10:02, 29 March 2007 (EDT)
- Welcome back. It is always a special feeling to cross the Ganga - especially at dawn or dusk. Anyway, I'm going to be out of action for a few weeks, so we are changing the guards! (WT-en) WindHorse 11:19, 6 April 2007 (EDT)
Congratulations
[edit]...to the launch of Wikivoyage in Hindi. Have you seen the status report page where the various language versions report their progress on Shared? If not, feel free to take a look at Liaison reports. (WT-en) Riggwelter 19:22, 30 March 2007 (EDT)
Absolutely, with pleasure... probably later today. FYI, I'm probably going to create the page names in English at first, partly because it will be easier for me to add the templates to new articles ( {{subst:smallcity}}, etc) , but also because I don't want to wrongly guess at the proper names for those templates. When you do translate the page names, you could just move the pages to the new names, though if possible it would be nice for me (and perhaps Sapphire, etc) to also have the English ones in existence so we can help out more, in which case you should just create new pages and copy in the info. But either way. – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 19:40, 7 April 2007 (EDT)
Quickbar
[edit]Were you editing the wrong wiki? -- (WT-en) Sapphire • (Talk) • 08:51, 11 April 2007 (EDT)
I'd love to help with this, but I am completely unable to read Hindi, so I can't even find the Quickbar template on hi. :) - (WT-en) Todd VerBeek 09:44, 11 April 2007 (EDT)
I'm not sure what the problem is with the "topimage" part of the Quickbar template, but I modified it so the template at least works now. Someone who really understands that feature could probably give a better explanation of why it wasn't working. - (WT-en) Todd VerBeek 13:32, 11 April 2007 (EDT)
Yes, that was me who fixed the template. I finally figured out how that bit works. I've looked at the main page for the Hindi Wikivoyage, and although I have no idea what any of it says, it looks good. - (WT-en) Todd VerBeek 12:55, 12 April 2007 (EDT)

Contributions
[edit]Greetings from Ohio Upamanyu! As we know, you are a very good contributor to wikivoyage, may I make a suggestion. One of the things that wikivoyage is lacking, is good photo's. They have a lot of good ones, but when you consider the area they are covering, they only have a few. This may be one of the many areas in which you could be a great help. Some whine about Photoshop, but it is a great tool and a way to crop and enhance what may be a useless photo. Some tips:1.)Take a lot of photos. A memory card that can hold a 1,000 photos and can be reused is about US25.00. 2.) In many cases (landscapes, buildings, cities} is may be best to get far back from the subject and then crop out what you want. 3.)Lighting is of utmost importance. Usually, it is best to have the light source to your back. When outside blue skies will usually add a lot to the beauty of the photo or subject. 4.) Take a lot of photo's. 5.) Take a lot of photo's. 6.) Take a lot of photo's. You get the idea. I find your country to be very interesting, they say a photo is worth a thousand words. One last word of advice. Keep your original photo's stored on a memory type that you can access when you are my age (60). It will bring back many pleasant memories. Best of luck to you young man! (WT-en) 2old 12:36, 22 September 2007 (EDT) One last thought, keep people out of the photo's you submit online, the main reason is liability. Please ask your father to explain this. It may be something not to worry about, but as always, play it safe. (WT-en) 2old 12:41, 22 September 2007 (EDT)
