Kano

Kano is the capital of Kano state in northern Nigeria, situated along the Jakara River. Founded by a blacksmith named Kano, the site shows evidence of prehistoric settlement. It became the capital of the Hausa state in the 12th century, and construction of the famous city wall, which is over 12 miles long, began during that time. The city played a crucial role in trans-Saharan trade, particularly after becoming the capital of an emirate following the Fulani jihad in the early 19th century. The central Kurmi Market, located within the walled area, served as a key caravan terminus. Trade involved various goods, including cowrie shells as currency. With the British capture in 1903 and the opening of a railway in 1912, trade shifted southward to the Gulf of Guinea.
